Niemi signs one-year contract with Canadiens

Goalie played for three teams this season, could have become UFA on July 1

Antti Niemi signed a one-year, $950,000 contract with the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday.
The 34-year-old goalie, who could have become an unrestricted free agent July 1, was 7-9-4 with a 3.12 goals-against average and .911 save percentage in 24 games (20 starts) with three teams this season.

Niemi went 7-5-4 with a 2.46 GAA, .929 save percentage and one shutout in 19 games (17 starts) with Montreal, filling in for injured starter Carey Price. The Canadiens claimed Niemi off waivers from the Florida Panthers on Nov. 14. He went 0-1-0 with a 5.08 GAA and .872 save percentage in two starts with Florida.
Niemi signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins on July 1, 2017 after he was bought out by the Dallas Stars. After going 0-3-0 and allowing 16 goals on 79 shots (7.50 GAA, .797 save percentage), he was waived and claimed by the Panthers on Oct. 24.
Signed by the Chicago Blackhawks as a free agent May 5, 2008, Niemi is 234-134-55 with a 2.52 GAA, .913 save percentage and 36 shutouts in 447 games (426 starts) with the Canadiens, Panthers, Penguins, Stars, San Jose Sharks and Blackhawks.
Niemi is 36-29 with a 2.77 GAA, .905 save percentage and two shutouts in 67 games (65 starts) in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, including winning all 16 games to help Chicago win the Cup during his first full season in the League (2009-10).
