Rapid Recap: Avalanche 4, Kings 1

Andre Burakovsky and Nazem Kadri each had a goal and an assist to help the Colorado Avalanche improve to 4-1-1 on its homestand with a 4-1 win against the Los Angeles Kings at Ball Arena on Sunday.
Dan Renouf had two assists to record his first multi-point game in the NHL while Nathan MacKinnon found the back of the net for the second straight game. Philipp Grubauer made 27-of-28 saves for the Avs.
Brandon Saad, Valeri Nichushkin, Mikko Rantanen and Gabriel Landeskog each registered a helper in the win.

Kurtis MacDermid scored for the Kings while goaltender Calvin Petersen made 37 saves.
The Avs are now (2-1-0) against the Kings this season. Colorado and Los Angeles meet again on April 16-18 at Ball Arena.

11:05 COL (1-0) - Nazem Kadri skated the puck into the offensive zone before toe dragging into the slot and scoring top shelf.

14:05 COL (2-0) - Nazem Kadri sent a saucer pass to the top of the crease and Andre Burakovsky scored with a backhander.
17:09 COL (3-0) - The rebound from a Valeri Nichushkin shot bounced off of Cal Petersen and Joonas Donskoi batted it into the net in the crease.

6:07 LAK (3-1) - Kurtis MacDermid scored with a shot from the blue line.
16:41 COL (4-1) - ENG, Nathan MacKinnon scored for the second straight game into an empty net.

STAT OF THE NIGHT

Philipp Grubauer made 27 saves to earn his 15th win of the season, his 51st with the Avalanche. His 51 wins move him into a tie with Craig Anderson (51) for ninth place in franchise history.
Grubauer had his career-long shutout streak end at 134:22 when Los Angeles scored 6:07 into the third period. The last goal he had allowed was at the 18:05 mark of the second period against the Arizona Coyotes on Wednesday.

NOTEBOOK

Dan Renouf registered two assists in the contest to record his first multi-point game in the NHL… Nazem Kadri had a goal and an assist to register his sixth contest with more than a point this season… Andre Burakovsky also had a marker and a helper to record his fifth multi-point outing of the year… Nathan MacKinnon scored an empty-net goal for the second straight game... Colorado's 20 shots in the first period were the team's most in the opening frame this season… The Avs are 4-1-1 so far on this homestand and 7-2-1 in their last 10 contests... The matchup marked the Avalanche's first afternoon contest at Ball Arena this season. Colorado has played three matinee games so far (2-1-0), although the NHL Outdoors game at Lake Tahoe on Feb. 20 didn't finish until well into the night... The Avs held the Kings to 28 shots on goal and have now allowed less than 30 shots (29 or fewer) in 16 straight games, extending their longest streak in franchise history... The Avalanche is 14-3-1 when scoring first this year.

ROSTER REPORT

Colorado had the same forward combinations and defensive pairings as it did for its last game on Friday. Philipp Grubauer was once again between the pipes, starting his 22nd contest of the campaign.

INJURY UPDATE

Bowen Byram (upper body) and J.T. Compher (upper body) took part in Friday's pre-game practice in red, non-contact jerseys. Head coach Jared Bednar said recently that Byram will probably be the first skater from the team's injured group to return to the lineup. Defensemen Dennis Gilbert (upper body), Cale Makar (upper body) and Conor Timmins (upper body) have also been skating on their own. Erik Johnson (upper body) and Pavel Francouz (lower body) remain out long term.

UP NEXT

Colorado hosts the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday before concluding its nine-game homestay with a two-game set against the Minnesota Wild on Thursday and Saturday.
