Brandon Saad Goal Celebrate Celly Los Angeles Kings Staples Center

Nathan MacKinnon recorded two assists to reach 500 career points and the Colorado Avalanche defeated the Los Angeles Kings 3-2 on Tuesday night at Staples Center.
Brandon Saad scored his first goal as a member of the Avs early in the first period, and Devon Toews and Mikko Rantanen each tallied power-play markers in a matter of 1:55 in the second frame to extend the Avalanche's lead.

Matt Calvert, Joonas Donskoi, Samuel Girard and Gabriel Landeskog joined MacKinnon with helpers in the outing. Colorado goaltender Philipp Grubauer made 23 saves.
Andreas Athansiou and Adrian Kempe notched markers in third period for the Kings to tighten the game late.
The teams meet again on Thursday in L.A.

The Avalanche used an 11-forward, seven-defensemen lineup with Andre Burakovsky out with an upper-body injury … Joonas Donskoi took Burakovsky's place on a line with Nazem Kadri and Brandon Saad, while Tyson Jost played on a trio with J.T. Compher and Valeri NichushkinDennis Gilbert made his Avalanche debut after being acquired in the offseason in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks. It was his 23rd career NHL game, all previously with Chicago … Erik Johnson played his first game of the season, doing so as the team's seventh defenseman. Johnson missed all of training camp and the first two games of the regular season due to league protocol after testing positive for COVID-19 … Hunter Miska was the backup goaltender for Colorado in the game … The Avalanche acquired defenseman Greg Pateryn from the Minnesota Wild in exchange for Ian Cole in a trade earlier in the day.
