Stars make 10 selections in 2021 NHL Draft

FRISCO, Texas --Dallas Stars general manager Jim Nill and director of amateur scouting Joe McDonnell concluded the 2021 NHL Draft by selecting nine players on Saturday. Below is a review of all 10 picks from the two-day virtual draft.

Wyatt Johnston - Center (First Round, 23rd Overall)

Johnston, 18, recorded 30 points (12-18=30) with a +14 plus/minus rating in 53 contests during the 2019-20 campaign with the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Among OHL rookies, he was tied for fourth in plus/minus rating (+14), shared 12th in assists (18) and ranked 14th in points (30). Johnston did not play in the OHL during the 2020-21 season because of the League's cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The forward has represented Team Canada on the International stage on two occasions. The forward posted four points (2-2=4) in seven games at the 2021 IIHF U18 World Championship, which was held at Comerica Center and Children's Health StarCenter Plano. At the 2019 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, he posted five points (2-3=5) and 14 penalty minutes in five games. The 6-foot-1, 178-pound native of Toronto, Ont. was selected by Windsor in the first round (6th overall) of the 2019 OHL Priority Selection from the GTHL Toronto Marlboros.

Logan Stankoven - Center (Second Round, 47th Overall)

Stankoven, 18, skated in six games and recorded 10 points (7-3=10) during the 2020-21 campaign with the Kamloops Blazers of the Western Hockey League (WHL). The 5-foot-8, 170-pound native of Kamloops, B.C. registered eight points (4-4=8) in seven games at the 2021 IIHF U18 World Championship, helping Team Canada capture the gold medal. Among all tournament players, Stankoven ranked first with a +14 plus/minus rating. The forward spent the last three seasons with Kamloops and registered 59 points (36-23=59) in 73 regular-season contests. He also appeared in six WHL postseason games in 2019, recording two points (1-1=2).

Artem Grushnikov - Defenseman (Second Round, 48th Overall)

Grushnikov, 18, skated in 29 games during the 2019-20 season for CSKA 2 of the Russian Jr. League. Additionally, during the 2019-20 campaign, the 6-foot-2, 198-pound defenseman also recorded two points (0-2=2) in eight games for CSKA U7 (Russia-Jr. U17), registered one assist (0-1=1) in four games at 2020 Five Nations Tournament and appeared in five games at the 2019 Hlinka Gretzky Cup. The native of Voskresensk, Russia will play next season for the Hamilton Bulldogs of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

Ayrton Martino - Left Wing (Third Round, 73rd Overall)

Martino, 18, registered 56 points (18-38=56) and 12 penalty minutes in 38 games during the 2020-21 season with the Omaha Lancers of the USHL. The 5-foot-11, 160-pound forward finished the season tied for fifth on the club in assists (38), while ranking eighth in points (56). Additionally, he skated in two postseason contests for Omaha. Prior to his time with the Lancers, Martino spent two seasons with the St. Michael's Buzzers of the Ontario Junior A Hockey League (OJHL) and posted 121 points (39-82=121) in 92 regular-season contests. He also appeared in 15 postseason games with St. Michaels, registering 16 points (4-12=16). Martino will play next season for Clarkson University.

Justin Ertel - Left Wing (Third Round, 79th Overall)

Ertel, 18, skated in 18 games and recorded 28 points (9-19=28) during the 2020-21 season for the Summerside Western Capitals of the Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL). The 6-foot-2, 187-pound left wing led the club in points (28), assists (19) and points per game (1.56). He led his team and ranked fourth in the League with nine points (3-6=9) during the 2021 MHL Round Robin Play In. The native of Kitchener, Ont. recorded 93 points (40-53=93) in 56 contests in 2019-20 with St. Andrews College. Ertel will play next season for Cornell University.

Conner Roulette - Left Wing (Fourth Round, 111th Overall)

Roulette, 18, recorded 12 points (6-6=12) in 11 contests during the 2020-21 season with the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League (WHL). The 5-foot-11, 180-pound left wing finished the campaign ranked second on the club with a +4 plus/minus rating and fifth on the club in points (12). He also skated in three games with Selkirk of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL), recording two points (1-1=2). Additionally, he played with Team Canada at the 2021 IIHF U18 World Championship and posted five points (2-3=5) in seven games. The native of Winnipeg, Man. has appeared in 66 career WHL regular-season games over parts of three seasons, registering 51 points (25-26=51) with a +17 rating.

Jack Bar - Defenseman (Fifth Round, 138th Overall)

Bar, 18, notched 15 points (5-10=15) with 52 penalty minutes in 34 games during the 2020-21 season with the Chicago Steel of the USHL. The native of Newmarket, Ont. ranked fourth among club defensemen in goals (5) and fifth in points (15). The 6-foot-2, 193-pound blueliner skated for St. Andrews College during the 2019-20 campaign and recorded 19 points (7-12=19) in 22 contests. Bar will play next season at Harvard University.

Jacob Holmes - Defenseman (Fifth Round, 143rd Overall)

Holmes, 18, recorded nine points (3-6=9) in 57 contests for the Soo Greyhounds of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) during the 2019-20 season. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound blueliner also participated in the 2019 World U17 Hockey Challenge, posting one assist (0-1=1) for Canada Red. The native of Alliston, Ont. was selected in the first round (18th overall) of the 2019 OHL Priority Selection.

Francesco Arcuri - Center (Sixth Round, 175th Overall)

Arcuri, 18, recorded 15 points (9-6=15) and 10 penalty minutes for the Steel Wings Linz of the Alps Hockey League during the 2020-21 campaign. The 6-foot-2, 201-pound native of Toronto, Ont. posted 20 points (7-13=20) with 14 penalty minutes in 60 games for the Kingston Frontenacs of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

Albert Sjoberg - Right Wing (Seventh Round, 207th Overall)

Sjoberg, 18, skated in 18 games last season for Sodertalje Jr. of the Swedish Junior League and recorded 13 points (10-3=13) with 33 penalty minutes. The 6-foot, 183-pound right wing from Stockholm, Sweden skated in seven games for Sweden at the 2021 IIHF U18 World Championship and posted three points (2-1=3).
