matthews split

Auston Matthews has been on fire all season. It's about time he got doused in some water.

The Toronto Maple Leafs forward scored his 50th goal of the season on Thursday
into an empty net against the Winnipeg Jets
and returned to a dousing in the locker room.

Matthews became the Maple Leafs first

, when Dave Andreychuk scored 53 goals during the 1993-93 season.
Teammate Mitchell Marner lauded his teammate on social media.

Matthews is just the fourth Maple Leafs player to join the 50-goal club, joining Andreychuk, Gary Leeman and Rick Vaive, who accomplished the feat in three separate seasons. Matthews previous high was 47 goal during the 2019-20 season.
Matthews got a huge ovation from the crowd in attendance at Scotiabank Arena when he was announced as the first star.

He is now just four goals from tying Vaive's team record of 54 goals during the 1981-82 season. The Maple Leafs have 15 games remaining on their schedule.
