The Sabres were unable to solve Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Maxime Lagace during a 1-0 loss in their season finale at PPG Paints Arena on Saturday.
Lagace, making his Penguins debut, turned away 29 shots. The Sabres finished with edges in shots (29-23) and shot attempts (44-38).
Michael Houser did his part to keep the game within reach for Buffalo, making 22 saves. Jeff Carter scored the lone goal of the game for Pittsburgh.

What happened

Sabres interim coach Don Granato felt his team got too caught up in trying to trade chances with the Penguins during an 8-4 loss on Thursday. They tightened up defensively to open this one, outshooting the Penguins 11-3 during a low-event first period.
The Penguins still managed to strike first, and it was a familiar culprit. Carter, after scoring a career-high four goals on Thursday, saw the puck bounce in off his chest to open the scoring 1:58 into the second period.
Lagace shut the door the rest of the way, including a breakaway stop on Drake Caggiula during the second period and a point-blank save on a Victor Olofsson one-timer in the third.
