Shane Doan

Josh Doan wrote the perfect script for his NHL debut on Tuesday.

The Arizona Coyotes forward scored his first NHL goal against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Mullett Arena.

His father, former Coyotes captain Shane Doan, had a heartwarming reaction after his son scored at 16:33 of the second period, giving Arizona a 2-1 lead. The retired forward was elated as he clapped and hugged his family.

Like his dad, the younger Doan wasn't done scoring for the night. He scored his second goal at 11:33 of the third period to give the Coyotes a 3-2 lead. With the goal, he became the first player in franchise history to record multiple goals in their debut.

“It’s a little bit of fairy tale, to score two goals, score the winning goal, really play well, have a chance (for other goals),” Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny said. “I think that's the way life should be.”

Before the game, the Coyotes legend was grinning ear to ear as his son took his rookie lap.

Doan was called up from the Tucson Roadrunners on Monday. The young forward was drafted 37th overall by Arizona in the 2021 NHL Draft. He played two seasons with Arizona State from 2021-23.

His father played all 21 seasons of his NHL career with the Winnipeg Jets/Coyotes franchise from 1995-97. He is the Coyotes all-time leading scorer.

“I think just the whole night itself is going to be one I'll remember forever,” Josh Doan said. “I was told to soak in your first-ever game because you only get one first game, and it's a game I'll never forget. It’ll be hard to beat this one.”

After the game, Shane presented his son with the puck from his first goal before Josh was joined by the rest of his family for a photo.
