Marleau was selected by the Sharks with the second pick of the 1997 NHL Draft, then spent the next 19 seasons in San Jose before signing a three-year contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs on July 3.
Marleau was San Jose's captain from 2004-09 and helped the Sharks reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 17 times during his tenure, and the Stanley Cup Final in 2016.
He was also generous with his time in San Jose, doing charitable works for Ronald McDonald House in the Bay Area and
giving a home to "Jo Paw-velski," the stray kitten
who found herself onto the ice before a Sharks playoff game against the Nashville Predators in 2016.
