Coyotes_vs_Oilers

NHL Network and ESPN analyst Kevin Weekes will offer his thoughts for big games each week throughout the season.

The Arizona Coyotes and Edmonton Oilers each seek to remain hot when they square off at Rogers Place in Edmonton on Wednesday (10:30 p.m. ET; TNT, SN1, SNW, TVAS, SN NOW). The Oilers (40-23-8) have won four straight games and are 8-2-0 in their past 10. The Coyotes (27-33-11) are 6-1-1 in their past eight.
Here's my breakdown of the game.

Oilers

Pluses: Stuart Skinner (22-14-4, 2.90 goals-against average, .911 save percentage) has really established himself in goal, even though Edmonton gave Jack Campbell that big contract during the offseason. Center Connor McDavid is from another universe leading the League in goals (58), assists (78) and points (136) and is on pace for numbers we haven't seen in a while. Center Leon Draisaitl is second in NHL scoring with 106 points (44 goals, 62 assists), 30 points back of McDavid. The addition of defenseman Mattias Ekholm has elevated the Oilers' game defensively and has also been a big factor offensively; he has nine points (three goals, six assists) in 10 games since being acquired in a trade with the Nashville Predators on Feb. 28. center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (86 points; 31 goals, 55 assists) and forward Zach Hyman (74 points; 30 goals, 44 assists) each is having a big year. Forward Evander Kane is back and producing; he has five hat tricks in his past 50 regular and postseason games.
Minuses: Right now, the only negative is they're 25th on the penalty kill (75.7 percent). In addition, Campbell needs to turn it around; he has allowed at least four goals in six straight games.

Coyotes

Pluses: Arizona has looked impressive lately and was on an eight-game point streak (6-0-2) prior to a 2-1 loss at the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday. Forward Clayton Keller has 76 points (32 goals, 44 assists), the most by an Arizona player since Ray Whitney had 77 points (24 goals, 53 assists) in 2011-12. He's one of those players you pay to watch because of his creativity and skillset. Forward Matias Maccelli ranks third in the NHL in rookie scoring with 39 points (seven goals, 32 assists) and has nine points (three goals, six assists) i his past nine games. He's played really well since returning from an injury that caused him to miss a month of the season. Center Barrett Hayton has set League career highs in goals (15), assists (23) and points (38), including 13 points (five goals, eight assists) in an eight-game point streak.
Minuses: The Coyotes rank 24th in the NHL in goals against per game (3.42) and tied for 27th in goals scored per game (2.77). They've had a tough season but definitely are showing signs of improvement. Arizona is 3-5-1 in the second half of back-to-backs this season and a League-worst 7-22-8 away from home.
