Andersson's SHG helps spark Flames past Senators

CALGARY --Jonathan Huberdeau had a goal and an assist for the Calgary Flames in a 5-1 win against the Ottawa Senators at Scotiabank Saddledome on Sunday.

Elias Lindholm and Rasmus Andersson also had a goal and an assist, and Mikael Backlund and Nazem Kadri each had two assists for the Flames (30-24-13), who have won three of four following a five-game losing streak. Jacob Markstrom made 30 saves.
"Big win for us," Kadri said. "We've got to collect points as much as we can this stretch. But overall, just the whole 60 minutes was pretty positive for us. Made a lot of great plays. Hopefully, it's something we can build on."
Calgary is five points behind the Colorado Avalanche, who have played three fewer games, for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference.
"We've got to keep going," Andersson said. "We've got to focus on ourselves and get every point we can get. There's 15 games left. We've got to battle night in, night out. We've got to get all the points we can get. I think this is a game we can build off, for sure."

Tim Stützle scored, and Kevin Mandolese made 34 saves for the Senators (33-29-4), who were coming off a 5-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday and are 1-3-0 during a season-long five-game road trip.
"There's parts of the game we need to clean up," Ottawa forward Austin Watson said. "That being said, you do have to address it and have a short memory because this time of year the next one matters as much as any of the rest. It's tough. It [stinks]. It's back-to-back games of outcomes that you don't want."
The Senators remained six points behind the New York Islanders, who have played two more games, for the second wild card into the playoffs from the Eastern Conference.
"We have a ton of belief in our group," Senators defenseman Travis Hamonic said. "We've been resilient all season. We've played through a ton of adversity. We've clawed our way back into the race and into the conversation when everyone kind of left us on the side of the road a couple months ago. That's something that we have an abundance of, I'd say, in our room. We know. The proof's in the pudding."
The Flames thought they took the lead at 8:18 of the first period when Tyler Toffoli scored on a deflection, but a video review determined Jakob Pelletier was offside prior to the goal.
Andersson did give Calgary a 1-0 lead at 12:09, scoring a short-handed goal blocker side after receiving a no-look backhand pass from Backlund in the slot.
"I was yelling before 'Backs' did the move on the [defenseman], and after he did the move, I didn't expect it," Andersson said. "But then it came on a silver platter so it was just put it in."

Lindholm made it 2-0 at 18:26 on a power play with a one-timer off a backdoor pass from Backlund.
Stutzle cut it to 2-1 at 5:55 of the second period when he tapped the puck into an open net after a miscue below the goal line between Backlund and Markstrom.
Huberdeau, who was playing left wing after spending 30 games on the right, responded 1:08 later to make it 3-1 at 7:03. After a pass by Kadri deflected off Artem Zub, Huberdeau knocked the puck out of mid-air over Mandolese's left shoulder.
"'Naz' passed to me and it kind of hit their stick or something. I don't know," Huberdeau said. "I tried to deflect it a little bit and kind of got lucky with that. Finally went in. Might've looked sick. I just tried to deflect it. It was quick. I'm glad it looked good."
Noah Hanifin made it 4-1 at 13:08 with a shot from the left circle off a rush, and Trevor Lewis scored alone in front at 5:30 of the third period for the 5-1 final.
"Couple good bounces, good plays, and a couple unlucky bounces," Andersson said. "We stuck with it. We made some good plays and we got rewarded tonight."

OTT@CGY: Lindholm puts Flames ahead 2-0 with a PPG

Senators defenseman Thomas Chabot left at 1:32 of the third period with an undisclosed injury, and forward Mathieu Joseph left at 10:21 of the first period with a lower-body injury.
"No update," Ottawa coach D.J. Smith said. "Neither was able to return. We'll know more after the game here. Certainly, it didn't help."
