Markstrom, Tanev face former team

Jacob Markstrom and Chris Tanev gave the Vancouver Canucks the best years of their NHL careers to date. Now the goalie and defenseman are trying to top what they did in Vancouver as members of the Calgary Flames. Markstrom will start in goal and Tanev will be in the lineup against their former team for the first time at Scotiabank Saddledome (10 p.m. ET; NHLN, CBC, SN, TVAS2, NHL.TV). Each signed with the Flames on Oct. 9, Markstrom a six-year, $36 million contract and Tanev for four years and $18 million. Their Flames debuts didn't go as they had hoped. Markstrom allowed four goals on 34 shots and Tanev had an assist in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday. They didn't know when they signed that the Flames would face the Canucks 10 times this season, including four in a span of seven days from Feb. 11-17. How many times Markstrom starts against the Canucks remains to be seen, but he and Tanev would love to defeat their former team for their first win of the season with the Flames. -- Dan Rosen, senior writer

Wild about Kaprizov

The moment could be the start of something very special happening for the Minnesota Wild -- Kirill Kaprizov stealing the puck and scoring on a breakaway in overtime to give them a 4-3 victory against the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday. Kaprizov, who signed his entry-level contract on July 13 after six seasons in the Kontinental Hockey League, became the third player in NHL history to score an overtime goal in his NHL debut, finishing with three points (one goals, two assists) and two shots on goal on the top line i 21:52 of ice time. What will the 23-year-old do for an encore against the Kings (9 p.m. ET; FS-W, FS-N, FS-WI, NHL.TV)? The biggest question surrounding Kaprizov was how quickly he'd be able to adapt to the smaller ice surface in North America, but he already looks to have found a comfort level and confidence that could give opposing coaches much more to think about this season. -- Mike G. Canadiens seek first win

The Montreal Canadiens will look for their first win of the season when they visit the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place (7 p.m. ET; NHLN, CITY, SNE, SNW, SNP, TVAS, NHL.TV). Josh Anderson was sensational in his Canadiens debut, a 5-4 overtime loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday; the forward, who was acquired from the Columbus Blue Jackets on Oct. 6, scored two goals to help Montreal get a point in its season opener. But the Canadiens will have their hands full against the Oilers. Centers Connor McDavid (hat trick) and Leon Draisaitl (four assists) found their groove in a 5-2 win against the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday. -- Brian Compton, deputy managing editor
