Nico Hischier had a goal and two assists in the first period of the New Jersey Devils' 4-1 win against the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena.
Hischier, the No. 1 pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, scored 2:21 into the game. He then assisted on goals by Will Butcher (5:03) and Drew Stafford (14:19) to help the Devils build a 4-0, first-period lead. Jimmy Hayes scored a power-play goal at 9:02.

Cory Schneider made 22 saves for New Jersey, who finished the preseason 5-1-1. The Devils open the regular season Oct. 7 at home against the Colorado Avalanche.
Tyler Graovac scored at 2:41 of the second period for Washington. Braden Holtby made 29 saves.
