Eric Staal scored his first goal with the New York Rangers during a wild first period against the New York Islanders at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.
Staal, who was acquired from the Carolina Hurricanes for two second-round draft picks and prospect Aleksi Saarela on Feb. 28, scored the seventh goal of the first period at 13:45. Staal poked a rebound in front of the net past goalie Jaroslav Halak to cut the Islanders lead to 4-3.

Johnny Boychuk, Brock Nelson and Kyle Okposo scored three goals in the first 4:45 of the game against Rangers goalie Antti Raanta to give the Islanders a 3-0 lead.

The Rangers responded with goals from Oscar Lindberg and Tanner Glass 38 seconds apart midway through the period to make it a one-goal game.
Boychuk scored his second goal of the game at 13:14 before Staal scored his first with the Rangers 31 seconds later. The Islanders outshot the Rangers 14-10 in the period.
The Rangers are playing without No. 1 goalie Henrik Lundqvist, who is day-to-day because of neck spasms.
