Red Wings at Rangers | Recap

NEW YORK -- Lucas Raymond scored with 3:47 remaining in the third period, and the Detroit Red Wings extended their point streak to three games, defeating the New York Rangers 2-1 at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.

Raymond took the puck through the right face-off circle and around the net into the left circle before skating between the hash marks, causing Rangers goalie Jonathan Quick to lose his balance, and roofed the Red Wings' 41st shot of the night into the top right corner.

Detroit (11-7-1) is 2-0-1 since losing three games in a row in regulation from Nov. 4-9.

"I just tried to hold onto it, see what opened up, and eventually I was kind of by myself in front of the net," Raymond said. "Shooting is a big part of the game and maybe this time it was the right play not to shoot it (right away)."

Raymond also had an assist, Alex DeBrincat scored his fifth goal in three games, and Cam Talbot made 18 saves. The Red Wings were looking to bounce back after giving away a three-goal lead in a 5-4 overtime loss against the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday.

They outshot the Rangers 42-19.

"Really good response," Red Wings coach Todd McLellan said. "I wasn't real sure how it was going to go. Obviously, we took one on the chin yesterday and looking for some of that resilience. We saw it in our group and I thought that was our best overall team game for a full 60 minutes. We checked for our chances. We didn't have to play with a lot of carelessness or recklessness, and found a way. Used every minute we had to win a game. So, happy for the group."

Quick made 40 saves and Mika Zibanejad scored on the power play for the Rangers (10-8-2), who had won their past three, including 2-1 in a shootout at the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday.

"Today wasn't good enough," Rangers captain J.T. Miller said. "They outplayed us. If wasn't for 'Quickie' that game could have been wide open."

New York played the game without coach Mike Sullivan, who was absent for personal reasons. Assistants David Quinn and Joe Sacco split the head coaching responsibilities in Sullivan's absence.

The Rangers travel to Las Vegas on Monday to begin a three-game road trip. It's not clear if Sullivan will be on the trip.

"I don't have an update right now," Quinn said of Sullivan. "Obviously, from the coaches to the players to the organization we certainly think about Mike and his family. Never an easy situation when you have to attend to your family. That's all I can give you right now."

DeBrincat's power-play goal at 9:30 of the second period gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead.

Patrick Kane moved the puck across the ice from the left face-off circle to Raymond in the right circle. Raymond's shot got through Quick and DeBrincat, who was behind the goalie, put it in from the goal line.

Detroit finished 1-for-5 with 16 shots on goal on the power play.

"Their best penalty killer was their goaltender," McLellan said.

Said Quinn, "Their power play was humming it pretty good all night long. They generated an awful lot of scoring chances and momentum off of their power play."

Zibanejad tied it 1-1 with a power-play goal of his own at 11:59.

Artemi Panarin's shot from the point was blocked in front by Simon Edvinsson. It also hit Will Cuylle and popped free for Zibanejad, who was already below the left circle. Zibanejad and Panarin each extended their personal point streaks to four games on the play.

The Rangers have scored a power-play goal in four straight games and five of six after scoring four in their first 14 games.

"Our power play doesn't look as good as it did when we weren't scoring, I think there are things we've slipped in, but we're scoring and that's how it goes," Quinn said. "Obviously, we've been more opportunistic."

The goal came 36 seconds after Quick stopped J.T. Compher on a short-handed breakaway.

That was one of 18 saves he made in the second period. Quick made 13 more saves in the third, when Detroit outshot New York 14-3.

But Raymond forced him to go post-to-post and then back to the middle late in the third period. Quick couldn't recover, lost his footing and Raymond scored the game-winner at 16:13.

"The poise and the stick-to-itiveness, that's important, especially when you run into a goaltender that's hot," McLellan said. "We really have been stressing trying to get to the net and make it hard on the goaltenders, and I thought we did that tonight too. I was lucky enough to see (Quick) do that for a lot of years to a lot of teams and you just have to stay with it. Eventually you'll get an opportunity that he can't stop and that was the case tonight."
