Forward David Pastrnak said it was the idea of captain Patrice Bergeron.
"Bergy, he's always one step ahead with this kind of stuff," Pastrnak said. "It was his idea. And we all loved it, so we jumped on board right away. We had some fun ordering the stuff, and walking to the game. It was very fun."
Forward Trent Frederic, who just turned 23 years old on Feb. 11, wore a shirt from the Los Angeles ska punk band Sublime, who hit it big with their 1996 hit "What I Got," not that he was aware.
"To be honest I just got it a couple of days ago, I think it's 90s, I don't really know," Frederic said.
The team had some fun with the theme their official Twitter account, going full 90s.
One reference was to the 1994 comedy classic "Dumb & Dumber." It was no surprise that the line they quoted was spoken in the movie by Bruins great Cam Neely, who made a memorable cameo as Sea Bass.
