Top 5 No. 2 Draft Picks in NHL History

During Phase 1 of the Draft Lottery last Friday, the LA Kings learned that they have moved up two spots and now hold the rights to the No. 2 draft pick in the 2020 NHL Draft.

As the Kings scouting and management staff look to who they want to select, we take a look back at the Top 5 second-overall draft picks in NHL history.

5. Chris Pronger (1993, Hartford Whalers)

Even having cut his career short due to injury, Chris Pronger still finds himself on the list for Top 5 No. 2 Draft picks.

Pronger, who won the Stanley Cup in 2007 with the Anaheim Ducks and captained the Philadelphia Flyers in their run to the finals in 2010, was the epitome of a do-it-all defenseman. The 2015 Hall of Fame inductee won both the Hart Trophy and the Norris Trophy during his career.

Furthermore, Pronger leads all No. 2 overall draft picks with a +183 plus-minus, which includes two Bud Light Plus-Minus Awards at +47 in 1998 and +52 in 2000. Pronger recorded 157 goals and 541 assists (157-541=698) in 1,167 career games.

4. Brendan Shanahan (1987, New Jersey Devils)

The 2013 Hall of Fame inductee and three-time Stanley Cup winner comes in at No. 4. Shanahan, a King Clancy Memorial Trophy winner played a key role and was a part of the core of the Detroit Red Wings during all three of his Stanley Cup victories in 1997, 1998 and 2002.

Statistically, Shanahan ranks second in games played (1,524), plus-minus (+151), points (1,354), goals (656) and assists (698) among those drafted second overall. Lastly, an even more impressive stat; Shanahan only missed the playoffs twice during his 21-year career.

3. Evgeni Malkin (2004, Pittsburgh Penguins)

Evgeni Malkin may still be in his prime, but the career that the Russian center has already had is good enough for the third best No. 2 overall draft pick in NHL history.

Malkin's trophy case consists of three Stanley Cups, the Calder Memorial Trophy, a Conn Smythe, two Art Ross trophies, a Hart Memorial Trophy and a Ted Lindsay Award.

The future Hall of Famer has spent his whole career alongside former No. 1 overall draft pick, Sidney Crosby and the duo has proven to be an unstoppable 1-2 punch throughout their careers.

Malkin ranks second in points per game for No. 2 draft picks, averaging 1.18 points per game. Malkin has recorded 416 goals and 660 assists (416-660=1076) over 907 games so far.

2. Marcel Dionne (1971, Detroit Red Wings)

Originally drafted by Detroit, the longtime Kings center and one-third of the notorious "Triple Crown Line", Marcel Dionne lands at No. 2 on the list.

Dionne, the 1992 Hall of Fame inductee who spent 12 of his 19 seasons in a Kings uniform leads all No. 2 overall draft picks in points (1,771) and points per game (1.31).

Highlighted by five consecutive 100-point seasons in a Kings uniform and seven 100-point seasons over a nine year span, Dionne, along with linemates Dave Taylor and Charlie Simmer teamed up to be the first line in NHL history to all score more than 100 points in the same season.

Dionne recorded 731 goals and 1,040 (1,771 points) over 1,348 games played during his NHL career.

1. Drew Doughty (2008, LA Kings)

In just 12 years, Doughty has become a Norris Trophy winner and two-time Stanley Cup champion. Doughty has been the heartbeat and backbone of the Kings defensive corps since entering the NHL in 2008. Furthermore, Doughty has played at least 76 games in every full NHL season since entering the league.

Along with Anze Kopitar, Dustin Brown, Jonathan Quick and Jeff Carter, this core has been a part of seven playoff appearances, a Western Conference Finals appearance and two Stanley Cup Championships in the last decade.

Doughty still remains a core piece of the Kings defense as the team looks put together another playoff and Cup contending roster. So far, Doughty has tallied 117 goals and 385 assists (117-385=502) during his 919 game career, all in a Kings uniform.
