It had been a long 150 days since the Kings last played a meaningful hockey game before Tuesday night's season opener against the rivaled Vegas Gold Knights. Coming off of a season where the Kings made their first postseason appearance since the 2017-18 season, expectations for the team have grown and the standard for success has been raised. Entering the 2022-23 season, the Kings and their opening night opponent's, the Golden Knights are both expected to be fighting for a playoff spot in the Pacific Division.
As Golden Knights and Kings games tend to be, the season opener between the two rivals was both entertaining and filled with drama. The Kings struck first in Tuesday's nationally televised game when former first-round draft puck Gabriel Vilardi ripped home a wicked wrist shot off of a Quinton Byfield pass 10:36 into period one. The Golden Knights would go onto net the game's next two goals before Adrian Kempe evened the score at 2-2 with a beautiful Anze Kopitar pass to set up the goal.

After surrendering a power-play goal to the Golden Knights with under 13:00 to go in final period, Arthur Kaliyev capitalized on a loose puck in front net to again tie the game. Unfortunately, regulation did not end in a tie as Mark Stone took advantage of a neutral zone turnover by the Kings and scored with just 26 seconds remaining in regulation to give the Golden Knights two points.
Jonathan Quick stopped 47 of 51 shots.
