Thomas Greiss announced his retirement from the NHL on Wednesday, hanging up the goalie pads after a 14-year NHL career, which included five seasons with the Islanders from 2015-20.

Greiss was 101-60-17 with a 2.70 GAA, .915 save percentage and 10 shutouts in the regular season and 7-8 with a 2.41 GAA, .921 save percentage and one shutout in the playoffs from 2015-2020. Greiss is fifth in goalie games played (193) and wins (101) with the Islanders.

The Fussen, Germany native left his mark on the Islanders, backstopping the team to the team's first playoff series win in 23 years with a 2016 series victory over the Florida Panthers. Greiss was integral to the series win, making 47 saves - including a penalty shot save on Aleksander Barkov - in a 2-1 double-OT win in Game 5 and 41 saves in a 2-1 double-OT win in Game 6.

Greiss was in net for another playoff breakthrough for the Islanders, shutting out the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 7 of the 2020 playoffs, sending the Islanders to the third round for first time since 1993.

Greiss was also between the pipes for the Islanders return to Nassau Coliseum on Dec. 1, 2018 - making 28 saves in a 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. A month prior, Greiss made perhaps his most famous save as an Islander with a diving pokecheck on Sidney Crosby in overtime of an eventual 3-2 shootout win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In 2019, Greiss and goalie partner Robin Lehner

, given annually to the goalie, or goalies, with the fewest goals allowed during the regular season. Greiss recorded a career-high five shutouts that season.

"The year with the Islanders when we won in the first playoff round and of course winning the Jennings Trophy were special years,"

. "It was a nice place for me to play in. A good environment and I liked living there. That was certainly one of the highlights for me."

Off the ice, Greiss ran an annual summer hockey camp for children of military members at Fort Bragg, NC.

Selected by the San Jose Sharks in the third round (No. 94) of the 2004 NHL Draft, Greiss was 162-130-37 with a 2.77 GAA, .911 save percentage and 16 shutouts in 368 regular-season games (323 starts) for the Blues, Detroit Red Wings, New York Islanders, Pittsburgh Penguins, Phoenix Coyotes and Sharks and 7-8 with a 2.43 GAA, .922 save percentage and one shutout in 17 Stanley Cup Playoff games (14 starts).
