Rapid Recap: Capitals 4, Islanders 3 OT

The New York Islanders picked up a point on Monday night, but it came in ugly fashion, as the Islanders blew a 3-0 lead in an eventual 4-3 OT loss.
Sebastian Aho, Matt Martin and Hudson Fasching scored for the Islanders who built a 3-0 lead, but it was erased by goals from Garnet Hathaway, Tom Wilson and TJ Oshie to force OT. Dmitry Orlov completed the Capitals comeback with 33 seconds to play in the extra frame.
With the overtime loss, the Islanders fall to 1-1-2 on their currently homestand. The loss bounced the Islanders (50 points) out of the second wild card and put them four points back of the Capitals (54 points), who currently occupy the first wild card seed.

THE SCORING

1st Period:
4:24 - NYI 1, WSH 0 - The Islanders work the puck around the zone with Josh Bailey feeding Sebastian Aho for a quick one-timer at the point. Aho's shot gets through traffic and Darcy Kuemper.

13:19 - NYI 2, WSH 0 - The Islanders win an offensive zone draw back to Alex Romanov, who sends a wrister into traffic. The puck deflects off Cal Clutterbuck and then Matt Martin before eluding Darcy Kuemper. Martin's goal was his fourth of the season, eclipsing his total from last year.

2nd Period:
3:51 -NYI 3, WSH 0 - Hudson Fasching beats Kuemper with a sharp-angled shot five hole. The goal is Fasching's third of the season. Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Anthony Beauvillier pick up the assists.

10:01 - NYI 3, WSH 1 - The Capitals get on the board, as Garnet Hathaway slides an Alex Ovechkin rebound five-hole on Ilya Sorokin. Marcus Johansson picked up the secondary assist.
13:08 - NYI 3, WSH 2 - Tom Wilson gets the Capitals within one, burying his first goal of the season during a four-on-four stretch. Wilson finds some space in front of the net and finishes a feed from Nicklas Backstrom. Dmitry Orlov with the secondary assists.
3rd Period:
5:54 - NYI 3, WSH 3 - TJ Oshie ties the score, deflecting an Erik Gustafsson shot past Sorokin. Evgeny Kuznetsov with the second assist.
Overtime:
4:27 - WSH 4, NYI 3 OT - Dmitry Orlov pinches off the blue line and is sprung by TJ Oshie, finding space in front of Ilya Sorokin. Orlov makes a quick move and beats Sorokin high for the winner.

NOTEBOOK:

JG Pageau left the game early in the second period after taking a high hit from Alex Ovechkin... Martin's point was his 12th of the season, marking his most in a season since 2018-19... Hudson Fasching led the Islanders with six shots on goal... Scott Mayfield played a team-high, game-high and career-high 28:10... Matt Martin had a game-high 10 hits... Monday marked the first time since January 28, 2021 the Islanders had blown a three-goal lead... Tom Wilson had a team-high seven shots as well as seven hits.

GOALTENDING MATCHUP:

Ilya Sorokin stopped 30 of 34 in the loss.
Darcy Kuemper 27 of 30 in the win.

SPECIAL TEAMS:

The Islanders power play went 0-for-1 while the penalty kill went 1-for-1, extending the team's perfect home PK streak to 10 games.
