The New York Islanders signed defenseman Luca Sbisa to a one-year contract on Monday after coming to Isles training camp on a professional tryout (PTO). Sbisa is a 28-year-old defenseman from Ozieri, Italy and has played 10 years in the NHL with Philadelphia (2008-09), Anaheim (2009-14), Vancouver (2014-17) and Vegas (2017-18).
He's 6'2, 209 lbs., a left-handed shot and was a first-round pick (19th overall) in 2008 by the Philadelphia Flyers. Get to know one of the newest New York Islanders in this edition of 7 Facts.


1. HIS STATS:

Sbisa has 102 points (18G, 84A), 344 PIMs, 692 blocked shots and 990 hits in 495 career NHL games with Philadelphia, Anaheim, Vancouver and Vegas.
Sbisa's best statistical season came in 2011-12 with 24 points (5G, 19A) with the Anaheim Ducks.
Sbisa had 14 points (2G, 12A), 54 blocks and 50 hits in 30 games with the Vegas Golden Knights last season.

2. HE REPRESENTS SWITZERLAND INTERNATIONALLY:

Sbisa was born in Italy, but has represented Switzerland on the international stage.
Sbisa played in two World Junior Hockey Championships (2009, 10) and captained the Swiss team in 2010. He's also donned the Swiss jersey for two World Championships (2011, 12) and at the 2010 Olympic Games.


3. HE'S HIGH UP ON THE SWISS NHL LEADERBOARDS:

Sbisa is the sixth-highest scoring Swiss player of all time, with 102 points (18G, 84A). That ranks third among Swiss defensemen all-time, trailing former Islander Mark Streit (434 points) and Roman Josi (292 points).
Sbisa has also played the second-most NHL games (495) of any Swiss-born player, trailing only Streit (786).

4. HE PLAYED IN THE STANLEY CUP FINAL LAST SEASON:

Sbisa was a part of Vegas' run to the Stanley Cup Final last season. Sbisa recorded four assists in 12 playoff games for the Golden Knights, appearing in all five games of the Stanley Cup Final. Sbisa also was an alternate captain for the Golden Knights.


5. HE WAS TRADED FOR CHRIS PRONGER AND RYAN KESLER:

Sbisa was a part of Philadelphia Flyers package (which included Joffrey Lupul and 2009 and 2010 first-round picks) to acquire Chris Pronger from Anaheim in 2009.
Sbisa was also included in the Anaheim Ducks package (which included Nick Bonino, 2014 first-and third-round picks) to acquire Ryan Kesler from Vancouver in 2014.

6. HE'LL WEAR NUMBER 21 FOR THE ISLANDERS:

Sbisa had worn 47 in the past, but will don 21 for the Islanders.
Sbisa will be the 18th player in team history to wear 21 and first since Chris Wagner wore it last season.


7. HE'S FLUENT IN FOUR LANGUAGES:

Born in Italy and raised in Switzerland, Sbisa is reportedly fluent in four languages: English, French, Italian and German.
