3. Ran out of gas
Although a good amount of the storyline coming out of tonight's game will be how another Vegas goalie got hurt, and how the team's fortunes went down the drain when this happened on Monday, this was a team letdown.
In the early stages of play, the Golden Knights owned the puck and had the Islanders on their heels. At the same time, the Islanders were rolling later in the game and had Vegas on its heels.
The Islanders were buoyed by another standout performance by their captain, as John Tavares scored two goals and was named the game's first star a few hours after being named the entire NHL's first star for last week.
When the Golden Knights had the better of play, they couldn't land the knockout blow, despite having many chances against Jaroslav Halak while ahead 2-1. But Vegas couldn't push through. Which in a way, is very similar to the team's only prior loss, when the Detroit overcame a third period deficit and won 6-3.
On the bright side, the Golden Knights are still 8-2-0 and have led in every game they've played this season.
On the down side, Vegas will need a much better effort to avoid a second straight loss tomorrow night against the Rangers.
