VatanenArticle

"In order to get something, you need to give something." That was the mantra Ray Shero was spreading on Nov. 30, 2017 when the New Jersey Devils acquired defenseman Sami Vatanen and a conditional third round pick in 2019 or 2020 from the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for forwards Adam Henrique and Joseph Blandisi and a third round pick in 2018. In what was defined as a hockey-trade, the Devils were able to plug a top-flight defenseman into the lineup and Vatanen delivered in spades. During his 57 games played for New Jersey, the Finland native collected 28 points (3g-25a) and was a wizard when quarterbacking the Devils power play unit. Check out some of Sami Vatanen's finest work in his first season as a New Jersey Devil.

FIN-ishing Touch

The Finland-native defenseman sealed the deal with his first goal as a Devil, tallying an empty net goal in a tightly fought contest against the Red Wings.

Flower Re-arrangement

Sami Vatanen used his power play prowess to beat Marc Andre-Fleury with a one-timer in front of the Prudential Center crowd.

Precision Passing

Nico Hischier was able to split the defense and received a perfectly placed pass from Sami Vatanen, who picked up the assist on this go-ahead goal.

Alley-Oop!

Vatanen's slick dish went up and over the defense Miles Wood spring the forward on a breakaway which led to a beautiful goal against the Caps.

Point Blank

Tons of traffic wasn't going to stop this puck from tickling the twine. Pekka Rinne has no shot of Vatanen's blistering slapper from the blueline.

High Speed From The High Slot

Prior to Vatanen's postseason being cut short due to a concussion suffered against the Bolts, he was able to beat Andrei Vasilevskiy with this sick wrister.
