Fredrik Claesson joined the New Jersey Devils at the NHL Trade Deadline this past season, adding depth to the Devils defense. Claesson played in just five games before the NHL regular season was pause and subsequently cancelled. In his short first taste of Devils hockey, Claesson registered two points in five games. This past summer has been a transformative one away from the ice, which you can read about in this week's edition of Three Things: Fredrik Claesson, presented by Wawa.

1. ON THE MOVE

It was on February 24th, 2020 that the New Jersey Devils acquired defenseman Fredrik Claesson as part of a larger deal that sent defenseman Sami Vatanen to the Carolina Hurricanes. Claesson was playing with their minor league affiliate the Charlotte Checkers when the deal was struck. The Checkers were on a road trip in Hershey, Pennsylvania when Claesson got the call.
He immediately joined the Devils, hopping from one road trip to another, meeting the Devils in Detroit, about to start a five-game road trip that would take the team through California and a stop in Vegas. It was a quick transition for Claesson, who made it to Detroit just in time to catch the bus from the hotel to the morning skate.

2. ON THE ROAD

Joining the team on the road, Claesson didn't play in his new NHL arena until March 6th when the Devils hosted the St. Louis Blues. Against the Blues, he earned his first assist with New Jersey, and a first NHL point since February 27th, 2019.
He would follow up that performance with his first goal in a Devils uniform, and first NHL goal since December 8, 2018, against his former team, the New York Rangers, a night later on March 7th.
It continued a trend for the Swede, who has seven goals in his NHL career. All seven of his goals, dating back to the 2015-16 season, have been scored on the road, yet to record a goal on his home ice.

3. GIRL DAD

Claesson and his wife Selena welcomed their first child, a baby girl, on July 31st, 2020. Fredrik and Selena named their daughter Cali Kiara. The new dad shared the news with the world through his Instagram page, sharing a picture of the newborn added a cute hashtag #FatherFred.
