NEWARK, NJ -The Devils persevered throughout 10 rounds of a shootout and picked up two points against the Carolina Hurricanes at Prudential Center Sunday. They finished the weekend with four points after beating the Flyers Saturday in the first half of the back-to-back.
Miles Wood had the shootout winning goal, and also led the team in scoring with three points. Pavel Zacha had two goals in the win. This was Zacha's fourth straight game with two-goals for the Devils.
"It's great to get a couple goals. The team is winning right now, I'm really happy about it," said Zacha following the game. "These goals, looks like everything is going to the net for me. I've been enjoying this so far for me."
Kevin Rooney started the scoring early for the Devils, getting on the board just three minutes into the first period. The Devils brought the puck in to the offensive zone and in a quick series of passes Dakota Mermis shot. Kevin Rooney was screening the goaltender, and scores on the rebound.

The Hurricanes would respond with a pair of goals in the next few minutes. First Martin Necas opened the scoring for the Hurricanes. Then Andrei Svechnikov's goal a minute and a half later would put the visitors up 2-1.
Nico Hischier's goal less than a minute later would tie things up at 2, and allow the Devils to respond to Carolina's pair of goals. PK Subban threw a shot on net from the blue line, Nico Hischier was right in front of the net, grabbed the rebound and scored.
Thirty seconds after Hischier's goal, the center was called for tripping and the Devils penalty kill had their first work on the game. The penalty kill started off clearing the puck and seeing some offensive zone time. Following that the special teams unit continued to clear the puck was successful in keeping the Hurricanes from scoring.
Carolina would take a 3-2 lead with 13:19 on the clock when Trevor Van Riemsdyk's shot from the high slot beat Schneider top shelf.
Miles Wood scored in the final three minutes of the period to give the Devils a tie going into the second period. Kyle Palmieri down low, passed the puck to Nico Hischier in the face-off circle. Hischier saw Wood positioned in front of goal, passed him the puck and Wood scored off of the goaltender's right hip.
The Hurricanes were called for tipping in the final two minutes of the game, and the Devils would see their first power play of the night. The team was unable to score on the power play during the final minute and a half of the first period, but would have 28 seconds on the man-advantage at the start of the second.
After one period of play, the Hurricanes lead the Devils in shots 32-23. The teams were tied in face-off wins at 22.
The Devils started the period on the power play but were unable to convert. They get another chance at a man-advantage four minutes into the second period. At the start of the power play, the puck was cleared to the Devils zone. Teuvo Teravainen forced a turnover behind the net, saw Sebastian Aho crashing the net, fed a quick pass to him, and Aho was able to score shorthanded, putting the Hurricanes up 4-3. The Devils were unable to score on the power play.
New Jersey saw their third power play of the game six and a half minutes into the frame when Carolina was called for tripping. Pavel Zacha scored a minute into the man-advantage giving the Devils their first power play goal of the game. Zacha converted on the rebound of Miles Wood's shot to tie the game at 4.
Zacha would get his second goal of the night five minutes later. Jesper Bratt intercepted a pass between Hurricanes players and found Gusev who carried it into the Devils zone. Zacha drove to the net after a quick pass from Nikita Gusev in the right corner, and scored giving the Devils a 5-4 lead.
The Devils lead only lasted 16 seconds as Warren Foegele scored for the Hurricanes. Foegele got a quick shot off a feed from Vincent Trocheck who was low. The Devils responded quickly though, with Jack Hughes scoring 30 seconds later. Hughes was camped out low, left of the goal. Janne Kuokkanen as driving behind the net, saw Hughes, passed it back and Hughes was able to bury the feed before the goaltender could react. The Devils lead 6-5 with seven minutes left in the second period.
The Hurricanes were called for tripping with just under six minutes to play in the second period and the Devils power play saw their fourth opportunity of the game. Although the team was unable to score during the man-advantage Travis Zajac scored four seconds after the power play expired.
At the end of the power play the puck was cleared to the Devils end. With quick passes from Subban and Hughes, Zajac worked the puck up ice against two defenseman. Miles Wood joined the play and Zajac fed the puck to him. Wood then found Zajac crashing the net. Zajac shot, gathered his own rebound and shot again, this time beating the Hurricanes goaltender with a shot landing in the top right corner of the net.
The Devils finished the second period with a two goal lead over the Hurricanes. The Devils lead in shots 28-20, in the second period and converted on 1 of the power play opportunities they saw.
Teuvo Teravainen cut the Devils lead in half four minutes into the third period with his goal. Sebastian Aho worked the puck in open on the left wing, saw Teravainen open across ice, and fed it to him. Teravainen redirected the pass into the back of the net.
Following the Hurricanes goal there were a series of penalties by the visiting team. First was a boarding call just under five minutes in to the third period. Then 53 seconds later, the Hurricanes are hit with a tripping call, giving the Devils a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:07. The Devils are unable to convert on their two-man advantage, and the Devils returned to the power play.
At the end of the power play, the Devils pull their goaltender for the extra attacker. Carolina is called for a hooking penalty giving the Devils a handful of seconds on the 5-on-3 advantage once again. Then, at the start of the Devils power play, Jack Hughes is called for hooking leading to just under two minutes of 4-on-4 play. The Hurricanes would have six seconds of a power play. Neither team was able to convert during the four straight penalties in the third period.
The Devils had one last chance on the power play in the third period when the Hurricanes were called for slashing in the final eight minutes of regulation. The Devils were unable to increase their 7-6 lead going into the final minutes.
With four minutes left to play in the third period, the Hurricanes tied up the game at 7-7. Neither team were able to score, sending the game to a 3-on-3 overtime period. Both teams had several close chances to win the game in overtime, but neither team was able to convert, sending the game to a shootout.
In the shootout, both teams were unable to score in the first seven rounds of the shootout. Martin Necas broke through in the eight round against Schneider, going five-hole. Then, Jesper Bratt score, also in the eighth round on a backhand shot. Both shooters missed in the ninth round, and Carolina missed in the tenth. But Miles Wood beat the Hurricanes goaltender in the tenth round, giving the Devils a victory and two points.
"When you're on a wining streak like that it's great, just good chemistry with the linemates and team," said Zacha. "We just have to keep it going. It's a team game, it's great to be winning especially in those important games."
The Devils finish the weekend with four points and will travel to face the Pittsburgh Penguins in Pittsburgh Tuesday night.
