The Devils returned from a long hiatus to host the Coyotes at Prudential Center on Wednesday night, but it was not a joyous return to action as New Jersey allowed an inconceivable three goals on their opponent's first seven shots of the game on route to a 4-1 loss.
It was a weird game in which the Devils came out red-hot and smothered the Coyotes in the opening frame, but only had one goal to show for their efforts. The lack of finish eventually came back to bite New Jersey as Arizona capitalized on a run of puck luck and deposited those three quick goals behind starting goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood.
"I feel like we have to understand and learn how to play with a lead," said Nico Hischier. "Some puck plays weren't great. We forced some plays when we had a one-goal lead… We've got to learn to stick with it."
The third period didn't provide the Devils much relief as Arizona scored again to make it four unanswered tallies which capped off a disappointing home defeat for New Jersey.

Here are some observations. notes, and quotes from the game...
- Nico Hischier has had quite the stretch for New Jersey. The team's captain extended his point streak to three games. In that span, he has two goals and an assist. He has at least a point in nine of his last 11 outings. - That Hischier goal, which opened the scoring, came on the power play. It was New Jersey's seventh PPG in their last 11 games. - The Devils had a dominant puck possession first period. Arizona barely touched the puck and didn't have their first shot on goal until 1:09 left in the opening frame. Shots were 12-1 after 20 minutes of play. But they just had one goal to show for it. - The Devils continued to play well to begin the second but fell prey to the old trap of not finishing. Shots were 21-3 when the Coyotes tallied the equalizer at 6:50 of the middle frame. Dysin Mayo was the scorer. This moment flipped the script. - On only their fourth shot of the game, the Coyotes scored again to take the lead, this time Lawson Crouse scored from down on one knee. And the nightmare run continued for New Jersey with Mackenzie Blackwood letting in his third goal on seven shots faced, at 14:13 of the second. Travis Boyd got credit for the goal that was sent in past the Devils netminder. - "It means keep playing the right way," said Hischier of learning to play with the lead. "We thought we had the game fully under control but in this league there's one little mistake and it's in the back of our net. We got a little too fancy sometimes. That has to go away." - Coming into the night the Devils trailed 21 times entering the third and were 2-17-2 in those games. Tonight was their 18th loss in 22 such situations. - "Did a lot of good things in the first period but the good things were negated by some of the play in the second period," said Head Coach Lindy Ruff. "We had some looks, we made some mistakes, obviously, but it was small details that cost us… That second period wasn't good enough to win a hockey game." - At 8:27 of the third, Johan Larsson increased the Coyotes lead to 4-1. Clayton Keller got the primary assist on the goal, which kept his hot streak going. He has 13 points in his last 11 games. - "Frustrating," said Devils defenseman Ryan Graves. "We need to find a way to manage the game better. We had a lot of the possession… I'm sure the chances were not that lopsided. But we have to capitalize on ours. It's on us." - The Devils pulled Blackwood with 3:05 remaining in the third period. Arizona iced the puck multiple times but never could find twine on the wide-open empty net. - Karel Vejmelka finished the game with 35 saves for Arizona.
