PRE-GAME STORY
PITTSBURGH, Pa. -The hits keep coming for the New Jersey Devils as the news of upper-body injuries to starting goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood and young blueliner Ty Smith will sideline them for Tuesday night's game against at Pittsburgh.
The Devils are already missing their Top 2-point producers in Pavel Zacha (undisclosed) and Jesper Bratt (lower-body).
Both Blackwood, who did partake in the team's morning skate Tuesday, and Smith suffered their injuries in Sunday's contests against the New York Rangers.
"Ty missed a little bit of time last game, but he was able to get through it," Devils head coach Lindy Ruff said. "(Blackwood) from the hit he took the other night in the game. We were unsure of it, and he's unable to go."
That hit occurred when the Rangers' Alexis Lafreniere was shoved into Blackwood in the second period. Blackwood needed attention from the club's athletic trainer, but managed to finish the game.
Defenseman Will Butcher worked on the team's power play at morning skate, and appears to be re-entering the lineup. Zacha and Bratt both joined their teammates for the tail end of the morning skate.
"It's a step closer to getting them back in the lineup," Ruff said. "Obviously, those are two veteran guys that we need, that were helping us make a difference."
THE HARD DRAW
There's no secret that the Penguins' top line of Sidney Crosby, Jake Guentzel and Bryan Rust has been effective against the Devils all season long. The trio has combined for 24 points (11G-13A) in just five games.
Typically, the defensive assignment against that line fell on the shoulders of veteran center Travis Zajac. Following his departure, it was up to Jack Hughes to fill the void. But heading into Tuesday's game, the Devils do not get to make the last line change as a result of being the visiting team. So, Ruff is hoping he can get either Hughes or captain Nico Hischier, a defensively responsible forward, against Crosby's line.
"If I end up with either (Hughes or Hischier), it's a matchup I would prefer," Ruff said. "I think in those early games I was able to get Zajac, (Janne) Kuokkanen and (Yegor) Sharangovich against him. That seemed like a good matchup. But that matchup moves to Nico or Jack now."
Ruff feels comfortable with both of his centermen handling that duty, but may lean on one more if possible depending on the flow of the game.
"Again, that's a process of evaluating who's handling that situation the best," he said.
SPECIAL TEAMS
The Devils won the 5-on-5 game Sunday against the New York Rangers, but ultimately lost the game because of two power-play goals against.
"There's no secret it was disappointing," Ruff said. "Two bad reads, missed assignment on the first one where we allow an easy tap-in backdoor goal (to Chris Kreider). The second goal was just probably a foot away from the right read. But again, a missed assignment on the coverage of the slot guy (Mika Zibanejad). We have to clean up those."
The Devils PK unit will get another tough task against Pittsburgh's power play, which has scored at a 45.5-percent rate against New Jersey this season. They hope to correct their recent shortcomings quickly.
"Show guys individually what the appropriate place to be, when to be aggressive," said Ruff about working to improve the PK. "We were doing a good job on that last kill (against New York) to that point (of the goal). We made a mistake and it cost us dearly. Clean up those mistakes, learn from them and move on."
