PHILADELPHIA - The New Jersey Devils lost more than just their game against the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday afternoon. In a 3-1 loss, the Devils were down to one goaltender and 11 forwards 41 seconds into the second period. The Devils retain their second-place spot in the Metropolitan Division, however, in spite of the loss. They have 56 points.

Here are 10 takeaways from the game:
1. For the second time in three games, the Devils had to fight back early in the game. New Jersey gave up a goal on their opponent's first shot of the game. Saturday afternoon, Kinkaid let in Flyers forward Travis Konecny's shot from the right circle at 3:29 of the first to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead.
2. Kinkaid's afternoon ended in injury at the 12:15 mark of the first period. Kinkaid left with a lower body injury after letting in the Flyers' third goal of the first period on just seven shots. Kinkaid was replaced by rookie goalie Ken Appleby who was called up on an emergency basis on Friday evening and met the team in Philadelphia.
3. Appleby finished the remainder of the game, playing a total of 46:04.

He was tested early with three shots in quick succession to get into the groove of NHL play. In his first 7:42 of play, Appleby made six saves on six shots before the end of the opening period. He would continue to make big saves stopping all 24 shots he faced in his NHL debut.
4. Devils defenseman John Moore dropped the gloves at 16:28 of the first period with Michael Raffl. Moore took exception to Appleby's being taken down behind his net, and asked Raffl to fight. Both players received five minutes for fighting.

  1. Devils forward Brian Gibbons blocked a shot from Flyers defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere on the penalty kill early in the second period. The puck struck Gibbons in the hand. Gibbons finished his shift before heading to the bench and right to the Devils' locker room. He did not return and played just 6:19.
  1. Jesper Bratt has reached the 30-point plateau this season with his 12th goal of the year. Bratt's power play marker reduced the Flyers' lead to 3-1 at 8:12 of the second period. Bratt fired the puck from the right circle, a perfect snapshot that beat Flyers netminder Michal Neuvirth cleanly. Will Butcher had the cross-ice pass to Bratt, and Taylor Hall earned the secondary assist.

    7. Hall continues to put points on the board. The All-Star forward's assist on Saturday afternoon extended his point streak to a season-high seven games. The seven-game point streak matches a career high. He earned points in seven consecutive games from Jan. 16-Feb. 4, 2016 as an Edmonton Oiler.
    8. The Devils' penalty killers came to play on Saturday afternoon, holding the Flyers scoreless on four man-advantage opportunities. Bratt's marker on power play was the only goal on the Devils' five-man advantage opportunities.
    9. The Devils are now 5-6-1 against the Metropolitan Division this season. They also hold a 13-7-5 record against all Eastern Conference opponents.
    10. The Devils will be back home on Monday night to host the Detroit Red Wings, followed by a trip to Boston on Tuesday night.
