PRE-GAME STORY
NEWARK, NJ - The Devils hit the ice Friday for their morning skate ahead of their first home preseason contest tonight against the New York Rangers.
FIRST LOOK
Several Devils players will be making their debut (albeit in a preseason game) in the team uniform. They include three key off-season acquisitions in defensemen Dougie Hamilton and Ryan Graves and forward Tomas Tatar.
"It's definitely exciting," Hamilton said about his debut. "I think the first games are a little tough sometimes. I'll do my best to get some feel and back into some rhythm. It'll be nice to get back into a game day routine.
"It'll probably be hard to nap today. I haven't sat down and scheduled a nap in a long time, which is fine. I'll just have to get used to that again."
That excitement is permeating throughout the team.
"It'll be great to see him play," head coach Lindy Ruff said of Hamilton. "I think he's excited to get back playing and playing with this group, and seeing how he handles it."
As for Hamilton, he knows it's only one game, and only preseason game at that.
"You just try to play the system and try to do your best and help each other out," he said, "communicate and talk, try to make it easy on everyone."
SECOND LOOK
As with any preseason game, there will be a mixture of veterans working out the kinks and rust in their game as well as young players and PTOs (player tryouts) trying to earn a roster spot for the start of the regular season.
A few players from Wednesday night will get another look on Friday, including rookies Alex Holtz and Dawson Mercer.
Holtz, 19, was the star of Wednesday's 5-4 victory against the Capitals while skating with Yegor Sharangovich and Jack Hughes. He finished with two points (1G-1A), a plus-3 and a deciding shootout tally.
"He had a couple opportunities," Ruff said, "and he put a shot where not many players can put it for a goal."
Mercer, 19, also scored a goal in the contest with a sharp angle shot from below the circle that sneaked into a small hole. It was Mercer's hustle on a late penalty killing effort that drew a penalty and created New Jersey's late third period power play (in which Nico Hischier scored the game-winner). Mercer then took a faceoff in the final minute with the Devils trying to preserve the lead against the extra attacker.
"He's showed a lot. He's fearless with his play," Ruff said of Mercer. "He's getting inside. He blocked a couple shots. He took a big draw for us late 6-on-5. He's done a lot of good things.'
Forward Jimmy Vesey will also be getting a second look in Friday's content against the Rangers, his former club.
"I thought last game personally I was a little in between on some reads out there. Right back in the lineup tonight and hoping to have a good showing," Vesey said. "I'm looking to have a good game tonight and hoping to be a little more decisive in some of the reads out there.
"If anything to err on the side of aggression and not be on my heels so to speak. Some of the forechecks I didn't know if I should go or I should stay. I'll be a little more assertive tonight."
The coaching staff concurred with that assessment and wants to take out the hesitancy in his game.
"He's worried about an awful lot of stuff. When you're trying to make a team, make an impression, sometimes you use caution instead of being aggressive," Ruff said. "I'd rather see him lay it all out there and play as hard as you can."
GOALIES DUTIES
The Devils will have the same goaltending tandem they used Wednesday night in Washington: Jonathan Bernier and Nico Daws. In that contest, Bernier played the first two periods while Daws was in for the third frame and shootout, stopping all 10 shots and
Ruff hasn't decided how he will deploy his two netminders this evening.
"I haven't quite finalized that," Ruff said. "It might even be a game-time or as the game is going type of decision."
Ruff did say that goalie Mackenzie Blackwood will play Saturday's afternoon preseason game in Bridgeport against the New York Islanders.

DEVILS (1-0-0) at RANGERS (1-1-0)
TV: 7:00 PM ET; Televised on MSG+
Head-to-Head:
Tonight will be the first of two preseason matchups between the Devils and Rangers. The teams will meet again at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 6.
Devils team scope:
Devils fans will get their first look at off-season newcomers Dougie Hamilton, Ryan Graves and Tomas Tatar, as each will make their preseason debuts tonight.
New Jersey opened its preseason slate Wednesday night in Washington with a dramatic 5-4 come-from-behind victory in the third period.
Nineteen-year-old standout Alex Holtz, the club's seventh-overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, led the way with two points (1G-1A), a plus-3 and a shootout-deciding tally (the teams opted to practice the shootout despite the regulation win for New Jersey). Meanwhile, fellow 2020 first-round pick (18th overall) Dawson Mercer notched the game-tying third-period goal.
Both Holtz and Mercer, 19, were on the ice for the club's morning skate and could get a second look tonight against the Rangers.
Rangers team scope:
The Rangers will be playing in their third game of the preseason and first road contest. The club was shutout Sept. 26 against the NY Islanders. The Rangers followed that with a 3-2 victory against Boston Sept. 28. Anthony Bitetto, Kaapo Kakko and Artemi Panarin each tallied for New York in the win.
