Group A

It was an hour-long practice for Group A today, with Utica head coach Kevin Dineen as part of the coaching staff on the ice, working alongside Lindy Ruff and his coaching staff. The Utica staff have been rotating through the practice sessions getting their time on the ice during Devils camp before the Utica camp opens.
When a practice wraps up, it's always interesting to watch to see the routines of players before they're ultimately kicked off the ice for the Zamboni. Today, Jack Hughes and Alexander Holtz spent added time with assistant coaches with Hughes feeding one-timers to Holtz in his sweet spot atop the left circle. Meanwhile, at the other end of the ice, Palat spent added time with Lindy Ruff at the whiteboard going over systems and drills as he familiarizes himself with the new systems.

First Scrimmage

The first scrimmage of camp was between Group B and Group C, which meant a first appearance by goaltender Jonathan Bernier in game-action since December 2021.

Group C will be back on the ice for a scrimmage on Friday against Group A, with Group B getting in a morning practice session.
Already into the third day of camp, time goes quickly and pre-season games are quickly coming up on the horizon. There will be back-to-back's as well as away games on the schedule, which is why Lindy Ruff and his staff settled on three scrimmages before facing opponents in pre-season play.
"I really feel that the best way to get into a game is by playing these games to see the compete. These guys have been skating for weeks now, So overall, we set it up that almost everybody will probably get two (scrimmage) games and two practices. We're going to have to play back-to-back games so we just felt if everybody got a couple of scrimmages to get ready to be game ready, it would be the best way to go."
