PRE-GAME STORY
MONTREAL, Que. -It's the first of three meetings between the Devils and Canadiens and both teams are riding win streaks: Montreal with three games and New Jersey with nine. Tonight's game is an opportunity to see another young team that is looking to build long term success.
"They're an exciting team to play against," Bratt said Monday. "Especially with their young talent and their skill and they have a lot of sharp shooters, and they can really skate so it's an exciting game for us, we have a good test ahead and it's going to be an exciting game."
SPEED VS SPEED
Both the Devils and Montreal rely on their speed as one of their biggest strengths. As a result, it's an opportunity for the Devils to see how they stack up.
"We want to play a fast paced game and it's a good challenge for us. We get to measure our power and our speed with some other good teams," Bratt said. "I think we're excited about it, we know what challenge we have ahead and we still think that we played some good home games here but we still have a lot of levels to go, starts off (Tuesday)."
"I think it's going to be important to get pucks behind them, spend more time in the offensive zone, make good decisions when we get to the line," Devils head coach Lindy Ruff said following morning skate. "Tracking back, make sure we have people back. They've got some lines that are similar to us, where they do get up the ice in hurry, the defense are involved, so it should be a pretty good game when it comes to speed wise."
"(Montreal is) fast paced, they get up the ice well, they're one of the better rush teams, transition well, and they can get the puck in the net," said Erik Haula following morning skate. "Managing the puck is really important for us and staying on top of them."
QUICKER STARTS
As the Devils are looking to continue their win streak and keep improving small details to their game, better first period play is one of them.
"Execution, managing the puck better. We've made some ill-advised decisions with the puck early in the last couple of games, so getting the puck in the right place where we can generate forecheck opportunities is the key to a good start," said Ruff.
"We got to prepare better, we got to be ready to go," said Haula on what it takes for a quicker start. "Puck battles, managing the puck, there's a lot of little things that I think we can get better at. Obviously we're doing good, we're playing good hockey and winning games but I think the ceiling is higher for us and that's what we're striving to get to."
LINE CHANGES
The Devils have changed around lines throughout games and during morning skate, the second and third lines were altered from last game's starting lineup. Yegor Sharangovich moved up to the second line left wing spot with Erik Haula moving to center the third line. Dawson Mercer moves to the right wing while Jesper Boqvist is on the left wing on the third line.
"I feel like we started pretty well together last game, obviously we got a goal there, and just keep going from that," Boqvist said about the shifts. "(We want to) work hard, play good defense, chances will come and make sure we bury it."
HOW THEY MATCH UP
Power Play:
NJD: 19.6%, 22nd; MTL: 16.3%, 26th
The Devils have scored a power play goal in eight of their last nine games but are usually only scoring once. Take for example, the Devils had eight power play opportunities in their last game against the Coyotes but only scored once. The Canadiens power play has added a goal in its last two games, both at the Bell Centre.
Penalty Kill:
MTL: 80.8%, 12th; NJD: 80%, 14th
After a hot start in October, the Devils penalty kill has hit some growing pains in November, allowing eight goals against on 21 penalties. In three of those games, the Devils have allowed multiple power play goals. Throughout November, Montreal has allowed five power play goals through 25 penalties.
Face-offs:
NJD: 54.9%, 3rd; 51.1%, 12th
The Devils remain a top face-off team because of Erik Haula, Michael McLeod, and Nico Hischier. All three are in the top-15 for face-off wins with Haula fifth, McLeod ninth, and Hischier eleventh. Montreal has two players in the top-30: Sean Monahan (28th) and Christian Dvorak (30th).

Head-to-Head:
This is the first of three meetings between the Devils and Canadiens this season. New Jersey will host on Feb. 23, 2023 and the final game will be back in Montreal on Mar. 11, 2023.
Last season, the Devils won two of the three meetings: a 7-1 victory on Feb. 8 in Montreal and 3-2 in a shootout on Mar. 27 in Newark. In the final meeting of the year, in Canada, the Devils fell 7-4 on Apr. 7.
Devils Team Scope:
The Devils are riding a nine game winning streak as they kick off a three-game Eastern Canada roadtrip. It's New Jersey's first nine game win streak since Nov.-Dec. 2007. Not only has the team found different ways to win, they've had many players step up in the process.
After goaltender Vitek Vanecek left Thursday's game for precautionary reasons and was given the night off Saturday, rookie Akira Schmid stepped up in Vanecek's absense. Not only did Schmid pick up his first two NHL wins, he stopped 23 of the 25 shots he faced.
Captain Nico Hischier is riding a career high seven-game points streak where he's contributed five goals and five assists for 10 total points. Every time the Captain has recorded a point, the Devils have won that game. Forward Tomas Tatar, is on a two-game goal streak and a seven game points streak (2G, 7A). Forward Jack Hughes has one goal and four assists over the last four games.
Hischier leads the Devils in goals with 8 while forward Jesper Bratt leads the team in assists (14) and points (19).
Canadiens Team Scope:
The Canadiens are on a three-game win streak picking up victories over Detroit, Vancouver, and Pittsburgh. Tuesday's game is the final of a three-game homestand before Montreal hits the road. The home team has had ups and downs, often winning two or three games before losing two or three games in a row. In their last 10 games, the Canadiens are 5-4-1.
Captain Nick Suzuki leads his team with nine goals and 19 points and is second in assists with nine. Kirby Dach leads the Canadiens with 10 assists. Jake Allen, Montreal's starting goaltender, is 5-5-0 with a 3.19 goals against average and a .902 save percentage. After serving a two-game suspension for a hit against Matt Luff, Juraj Slafkovsky returns to the Canadiens lineup against the Devils.
The Devils will need to focus in on Montreal's top line consisting of Cole Caufield, Nick Suzuki, and Kirby Dach. Not only are they all in the top-three for points, they're all on two-game points streaks.
By the Numbers:
Montreal's Arber Xhekaj and New Jersey's Fabian Zetterlund are first and second respectively when it comes to most shots by rookies throughout the NHL (Xhekaj 28, Zetterlund 27).
Jesper Bratt has earned eight points through 11 games against the Canadiens (2G, 6A) since the 2017-18 season. The only other player to score more against the Canadiens is Hischier (6G, 4A).
