PRE-GAME STORY
NEWARK, NJ. -The Devils held an optional morning skate Thursday at Prudential Center ahead of hosting the Nashville Predators. One noteworthy attendee was defenseman John Marino.
Marino, 25, missed Wednesday's practice with an upper-body injury and was listed as day-to-day. However, head coach Lindy Ruff was optimistic on his availability for this evening.
"It looks like John's good to go, so good news for the team," Ruff said. "Right now, I'm confident he'll be able to play."
Marino suffered the injury against the New York Rangers Monday night, but was able to finish the game.
"It was precautionary and take it from there," Marino said of missing practice. "I'll come to the game later, game-time decision and see how it feels."
That is good news for the Devils. Marino has been one of the team's best defensemen through the early part of the season. In fact, in New Jersey's 5-3 win Monday night against the Rangers, Marino was on the ice for the final 2-plus minutes of regulation protecting the lead.
"When you're in the moment you don't think about it too much," Marino said of the hefty ice time. "You're playing at MSG and have the adrenaline, you're not thinking about that kind of stuff."
Swiss Connect
Thursday's matchup features a showdown between two Swiss captains in the Devils' Nico Hischier and the Predators' Roman Josi. Actually, there will be five Swiss-born players in the lineup.
"It makes us Swiss guys happy," Hischier said. "We're a small country, but we're doing a good job of developing ice hockey players right now. It's just getting better there. You can feel the hype back home in Switzerland. It should be a fun game."
Hischer, 23, grew up idolizing the elder Josi, 32. The Devils captain can still remember watching Josi and his Bern teammates winning the Swiss title in 2008.
"I do remember when I was younger and he was playing in Bern as an 18-year-old, watching games," Hischier said. "I was just impressed with him and the whole team. They won the championship that year. I was at that game."
Hischier has played with Josi in a World Championship, and they work out together in Bern during the summer.
"He's just an unbelievable guy," Hischier said. "A classy guy, a great guy. There's nothing you don't like about him."

TV:Televised at 7 p.m. ET; MSGSN
RADIO: Live at 7 p.m. ET; Devils Hockey Network
Head-to-Head:
The Devils host the Nashville Predators for the first of two meetings this season between the teams. Last season, the Predators won both games, first a 4-2 decision in Nashville and then 3-2 victory two weeks later at Prudential Center.
New Jersey will head south to Nashville to face the Predators on Jan. 26, 2023 to wrap up the season series.
Devils Team Scope:
The Devils are riding a three-game win streak after picking up two points against the Sabres, Capitals, and Rangers. Over those games, the Devils have outscored their opponents 13-5.
New Jersey's most recent win, a 5-3 victory over the Rangers, was the first Devils win at MSG since Feb. 2021. Tomas Tatar, Yegor Sharangovich, Jack Hughes, and Michael McLeod scored in the win, with Sharangovich netting two. Jesper Bratt, Nico Hischier, Dawson Mercer, Miles Wood, and Fabian Zetterlund picked up assists.
The Devils practiced on Wednesday after taking Tuesday off, and were missing two skaters. Defenseman John Marino is day-to-day with an upper body injury while forward Nathan Bastian remains out from an upper-body injury sustained on Saturday.
Forward Jack Hughes leads the Devils with 12 goals while winger Jesper Bratt's 18 assists are a team high. Both Bratt and Hughes are tied for most points on the team with 26. Over the last five games, Hughes leads the Devils with seven points, five of which are goals. Captain Nico Hischier leads the Devils over that span with five assists. Throughout the 22 games he's played this season, Hischier has 10 goals and 15 assists for 25 points.
Predators Team Scope:
The Predators enter tonight's contest going 6-3-1 over their last ten games, and most recently picked up a 2-1 overtime win against the Anaheim Ducks. Nashville is tenth in the Western Conference with 22 points and a 10-9-2 record. One of the Predators biggest strengths is face-offs. Nashville has a 53.3% win rate, and Ryan Johansen is third in the league winning 62.2% of the time.
Nino Niederreiter leads the Predators with nine goals, Mikael Granlund is first with 14 assists, and Filip Forsberg leads the team with 19 points. Forsberg and Roman Josi are two players to watch out for on the power play as both have a team leading eight power play points. Josi also leads the team with three power play goals.
Juuse Saros is 8-6-2 in the 16 games he's played, and the goaltender has a 2.92 goals against average and a .910 save percentage. The Predators backup goaltender Kevin Lankinen has a 2-3-0 record in his five starts with a 2.50 goals against average and a .922 save percentage.
Over the last five games, Roman Josi leads his team with goals, 2, assists, 5, and points, 7. The defenseman has 17 points through 21 games. Four of his five assists during the five game span were against the Islanders on Nov. 17.
By The Numbers:
The Predators penalty kill which is 13th in the league, has only allowed three goals against through 18 penalities. Over this time span that goes from Nov. 15 to Nov. 30, Nashville also didn't have a single penalty in their game against the Ducks.
The Devils set an NHL record for most wins in November when they won 13 of their 14 games. Only four other teams have recorded more wins in a single calendar month: Colorado, 15 wins in Jan. 2022; Boston, 15 wins in Mar. 2014; Pittsburgh, 15 in Mar. 2013; and Columbus, 14 in Dec. 2016.
