WHAT'S NEXT
Next up is the all-star break followed by a newly scheduled road trip through Ottawa, Montreal and St. Louis. The Devils play the Ottawa Senators on Monday, February 7. The game can be seen on MSG+ and heard on the Devils Hockey Network, including right here at NewJerseyDevils.com. Puck drop is 7:08 p.m. ET.
The Maple Leafs got on the board early. Jon Gillies tried to play the puck behind the net but lost a handle on it. Jason Spezza picked it up and slipped it by the Devils netminder to open the scoring.
Shortly after the goal, Wayne Simmonds took a penalty for tripping to send the Devils to the game's first power play but the home side was unable to convert.
Six minutes into the game, each team had three shots on goal.
Auston Matthews built off his hat trick on Monday, scoring top corner on a wrist shot from the high slot to double Toronto's lead to 2-0.
David Kampf ripped a shot near the same location as Matthews' shot - this time blocker side - to send the Leafs in front by three only 26 seconds later.
Late in the first, Matthews stripped Damon Severson of the puck behind the New Jersey net and quickly threw it out front to Mitch Marner who quickly shot it low past Gillies to make it 4-0.
Toronto's first power play of the game came with 3:32 remaining in the first period. With 20 seconds to go in the Zacha penalty, Severson was sent to the box, creating a five-on-three situation. Devils were able to kill off both penalties.
Shots on goal after one period were 17-9 for Toronto.
Michael Bunting completed a two-on-one, converting a pass from Marner with a quick shot blocker side to extend it to 5-0.
Midway through the second, Alex Kerfoot took a penalty to send the Devils to the power play and 14 seconds into the man advantage, TJ Brodie was ticketed for cross-checking to set up a two-man advantage for the next 1:46.
Pierre Engvall rifled a shot from the right circle with less than five minutes in the second, extending Toronto's lead to 6-0.
Shots on goal after 40 minutes were 28-18 for the Leafs.
Akira Schmid replaced Gillies in goal to start the third.
Jack Hughes wristed a shot from the top of the right circle to break the shutout of Jack Campbell three minutes into the third. Just over a minute later, Marner tallied to regain Toronto's six-goal lead.
