PRE-GAME STORY

BOSTON, Mass. -
Lindy Ruff called tonight's game against the Boston Bruins a 'tough opportunity' but one he hopes his team is ready to welcome and embrace. The Bruins sit atop the league standings and have had remarkable success all season long. They are the cream of the crop and the Devils will have one of their toughest matchups this season.
"I look at it as an opportunity for us to win a game and secure home ice," Ruff shared this morning. "They're four lines deep, their goaltending has been fabulous, both goaltenders have been really good for them. They're just a well-rounded team. Solid defense, when I watch them play from line one to line four, it's a highly competitive group that dangerous from that first forward to the 12th forward."
The club held an optional morning skate that was highly attended by Nico Hischier, Jack Hughes, Jesper Bratt, Michael McLeod, Nathan Bastian, Yegor Sharangovich, Jesper Boqvist, Jonas Siegenthaler, Kevin Bahl, Brendan Smith, Luke Hughes and both goaltenders, Vitek Vanecek and Mackenzie Blackwood.

Lucky Luke

This morning, just prior to the optional morning skate, defenseman Luke Hughes
signed his Entry-Level contract
to join the Devils, two years after being drafted 4th overall in 2021.
"It's been a long time coming," Hughes said, "It's been a dream of mine since I was a little kid. To do it with my brother in the room was pretty special. I'm really excited to be here."
Hughes jumped right from signing his contract onto the ice with his new team, wearing No. 43 and 'HUGHES' on his nameplate. Luke won't play tonight in Boston, Ruff confirmed but knows that when he does get the opportunity it's not always an easy task making the big jump from college hockey to the NHL.
"It's no easy task, you see it's a big jump playing that position," the head coach said, "Playing at this level for most guys, it takes time."
"We're looking forward to when he gets in the lineup and he'll be a big part of our team for a lot of years," older brother Jack added.

Milestone for Miles

Although born in Buffalo, NY, Miles Wood was raised in Massachusetts. Tonight, against the team he grew up watching, the Bruins, Wood will play in his 400th NHL game, all with New Jersey.
"To do it back in my home state, where I grew up playing, I watched the Bruins a lot as a kid," Wood said on Friday prior to leaving for Boston, "To play my 400th game against them, it's kind of weird, crazy how the timing of the whole thing matched up perfectly."

PREVIEW

DEVILS (50-21-8) vs. BRUINS (61-12-5)
TV:8:00 p.m. ET; Televised on ESPN+
RADIO:8:00 p.m. ET; Live on Devils Hockey Network
Head-to-Head:
The Devils and Bruins meet for the third and final time this season, and first and only time in Boston. The Bruins won the two previous meetings in Newark that bookended the Christmas break, 4-3 Dec. 23 and 3-1 Dec. 28.
Tomas Tatar and Nico Hischier each have three points (1g-2a) to pace the Devils. David Pastrnak and Patrice Bergeron have two goals in the season series. Pastrnak added an assist for a team-best three points. Goalie Linus Ullmark won both games for the Bruins.
Devils Team Scope:
The Devils are fighting for the top spot in the Metro Division, trailing Carolina by one point (though the Hurricanes have one game in hand). New Jersey is at the same time trying to fend off the New York Rangers for home-ice advantage in a possible First Round matchup. New Jersey holds the No. 2 with a five-point edge on New York.
New Jersey seeks its 51st win of the season, which would tie a franchise record set in the 2008-09 season. The Devils will have three opportunities to tie starting in Boston.
Center Jack Hughes leads the club with 42 goals and 95 points - one behind Patrik Elias (96, 2000-01) for the single season franchise record. Hughes is coming off a four-point game (2g-2a) against Columbus Thursday night. He has a five-game point streak for nine (2g-7a). Defenseman Dougie Hamilton has set career highs offensively with 21 goals, 52 assists and 73 points. He is five points behind Scott Stevens for the single-season franchise record by a blueliner.
Forward Timo Meier scored twice against the Blue Jackets, giving him 40 goals on the year (his first 40-goal campaign). He has nine goals and 13 points in 18 games since being acquired by San Jose. Hughes (42), Meier (40), Nico Hischier (31) and Jesper Bratt (31) give the Devils four 30-plus goal men.
Goaltender Vitek Vanecek posted a career-best 32 wins with a 2.46 goals-against average and .910 save percentage.
Bruins Team Scope:
The Bruins have already locked up the Presidents' Trophy for the best regular-season record and will have home-ice advantage throughout the playoffs.
But what's left to play for his history.
The next Bruins' victory would be their 62nd on the season, which would tie the 1995-96 Detroit Red Wings and 2018-19 Tampa Bay Lightning for the most in NHL history. And with four games remaining on their schedule, Boston could break both totals and leave their mark on league history.
The Bruins are led by the dynamic David Pastrnak, who set career highs with 57 goals and 104 points this season. He ranks second in goals and fifth (tied) in points in the entire NHL. After Pastrnak, Patrice Bergeron (27 goals), Jake DeBrusk (25) and Brad Marchand (20) each have 20-goal seasons.
The Bruins have two defensemen cracking the 50-point barrier in Hampus Lindholm (10g-41a-51pts) and Charlie McAvoy (7g-43a-50pts). But the backbone to the team's success this year has been in goal with Linus Ullmark. The 29-year-old netminder is 38-6-1 with a 1.90 GAA and .937 save percentage. Ullmark's wins, GAA and save percentage ALL lead the NHL.
By the Numbers:
Hughes' opening goal vs. Columbus was his 200th career NHL point. He is the second youngest player in franchise history to reach 200 at 21 years, 327 days old. Muller holds the mark at 21 years, 255 days.
The Bruins have the NHL's No. 1 ranked penalty kill with an 86.9-percent kill rate.
