Jonathan Bernier Focus Colorado Avalanche Tampa Bay Lightning 121617

Colorado Avalanche goaltender Jonathan Bernier has been named the NHL's Third Star for the month of January, the league announced on Thursday.
Bernier finished the first month of the year with eight wins in 11 January games, helping the Avalanche go 8-2-1 to start 2018. He recorded a 2.10 goals-against average and a .939 save percentage in January, and his eight wins rank first in the league.

He yielded two or fewer goals in seven of his 11 appearances in January and owns a 14-9-2 record with a 2.67 goals-against average and .917 save percentage in 25 outings this season.
Bernier had a nine-game win streak from Dec. 31 to Jan. 22, the longest of his career and tied for the second-longest streak in franchise history. The 29-year-old netminder was two wins shy of matching Patrick Roy's record of 11 straight wins in 1998-99.
The 9-0 run equaled the longest win streak by an NHL goaltender this season as Tampa Bay Lightning netminder Andrei Vasilevskiy also won nine straight from Oct. 9-30. Bernier posted a 1.53 goals-against average, a .955 save percentage and one shutout during the stretch.
The Laval, Quebec, native made 34 saves to pick up his 16th career shutout and second of the season in Colorado's 2-0 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets at Pepsi Center on Jan. 4.
He also stopped a season-high 45 shots, including 19 in the third period, in Colorado's 5-3 win over the San Jose Sharks on Jan. 18 in the Mile High City.
On Jan. 22, Bernier backstopped Colorado to its 10th straight victory with a 4-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre, the second-longest stretch in franchise history. He made 29 saves in the contest.
Bernier has now played in 277 career NHL contests and owns a 134-104-29 overall record with a 2.65 goals-against average and .915 save percentage.
He was named the NHL's second star of the week for his play from Jan. 1-7 after recording a 3-0-0 record with a 1.60 goals-against average, a .957 save percentage and one shutout in three games.
This is Bernier's first NHL Three Stars of the month honor and the sixth time the Avalanche has had a player receive the accolade. It is the team's second this season as Nathan MacKinnon was named the league's first star for the month of November.
Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin was named the league's first star of January and Boston Bruins center Patrice Bergeron earned second star honors.
