TORONTO -- Team North America defeated Team Sweden 4-3 in overtime in its final preliminary-round game at the World Cup of Hockey 2016 on Wednesday but will need help to reach the semifinal.
Nathan MacKinnon scored 4:11 into overtime to end a wild back-and-forth game, but Team North America (2-1-0) needs Team Russia (1-1-0) to lose to Team Finland on Thursday (3 p.m. ET; ESPN, SN, TVA Sports) in order to advance.

Team Sweden (2-0-1), which trailed 2-0 1:35 into the game, won Group B with the one point it earned in overtime and will play Team Europe in one semifinal. Team Europe lost 4-1 to Team Canada, which won Group A and will play either Team North America or Team Russia in the other semifinal.
