Marleau to face San Jose for first time since signing with Toronto

The Game

Forward Patrick Marleau, who spent his first 19 NHL seasons with the San Jose Sharks, will face his former team for the first time since signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs as a free agent on July 2. 

Marleau has seven points (four goals, three assists) for the Maple Leafs. He played 1,493 games, scored 508 goals and had 1,082 points with San Jose, all Sharks records.

Sharks center Joe Thornton is two points away from 1,400 in his NHL career. He's tied with Jari Kurri for 20th place on the League's all-time list. 

The Sharks, who went 3-2-0 on a five-game road trip, will open a five-game homestand. 

 

Players to watch

Center Logan Couture leads the Sharks in points (11) and goals (eight). He had five goals, including his second NHL hat trick, and six points on the road trip, which he ended with the game-winning goal in a 3-2 victory against the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday. 

Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews has seven points (three goals, four assists) in his past five games. He leads Toronto in points (15) and goals (eight), and is tied for second in assists (seven).

Status report

Van Riemsdyk (lower body) and Matt Martin (upper body) will return to Toronto's lineup after missing one game. Marner will be reunited with van Riemsdyk and Bozak. ... Paul Martin will miss his ninth straight game but is likely to resume practicing this week.
