Carpenter, a forward born in Oviedo, Florida, played two seasons with Sioux Falls of the United States Hockey League and three seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green before signing with the San Jose Sharks as a free agent March 26, 2014 and joining Worcester, their American Hockey League affiliate.
He played for Worcester in 2014-15 and almost all of 2015-16 with San Jose of the AHL and made his NHL debut for the Sharks against the Minnesota Wild on Dec. 12, 2015. Carpenter got an 11-game recall in 2016-17 and scored his first NHL goal against the Los Angeles Kings on Nov. 30, 2016.

Carpenter began the 2017-18 season with the Sharks and scored one assist in 16 games when he was placed on waivers and claimed by the Vegas Golden Knights on Dec. 13, 2017. He got more playing time with the expansion team and finished with nine goals and 14 points, then scored five assists in 17 Stanley Cup Playoff games to help the Golden Knights reach the Final in their first season.
After scoring 18 points (five goals, 13 assists) in 68 games for Vegas in 2018-19, Carpenter became a free agent and signed with the Chicago Blackhawks on July 1, 2019.
