STL@NYI: Filppula rips shot stick side for OT winner

NEW YORK --Jordan Binnington lost for the first time when Valtteri Filppula scored 1:37 into overtime to give the New York Islanders a 2-1 win against the St. Louis Blues at Barclays Center on Tuesday.

Binnington, who made 23 saves, was the NHL Second Star of the week ending Jan. 13 after winning his first three career starts after he was recalled from San Antonio of the American Hockey League on Jan. 5. He kept the game tied with back-to-back saves on Cal Clutterbuck from point-blank range in the closing seconds of an Islanders power play with 1:58 remaining in the third period.
"It's my sixth year pro now," said Binnington, a third-round pick (No. 87) by St. Louis in the 2011 NHL Draft. "I'm feeling good. I'm doing what I can every day to prepare to play at this level and I'm working with some good people.

"I can't say enough about how the team's been playing. It's been great sliding in here and it's been fun so far. It's obviously not as fun when you don't win, but on to Boston (on Thursday)."
Jordan Eberle scored for New York (26-15-4), which has won nine of its past 11 games and has allowed the fewest goals in the NHL (115). Robin Lehner, who made 30 saves, has won nine of his past 10 games.

"A special group," said Lehner, who leads the NHL with a 2.16 goals-against average. "We've just got to keep working hard. I feel good about it. It's a nice two points for us."
David Perron scored to extend his point streak to 12 for St. Louis (20-20-5), which had its three-game winning streak end.

Filppula won it for New York when he took a pass from Mathew Barzal and beat Binnington with a wrist shot from the right face-off circle.
Eberle scored his 200th NHL goal to give the Islanders a 1-0 lead at 8:43 of the first period. Anders Lee powered his way to the net and was unable to stuff the puck past Binnington, but Eberle got the rebound at the right post and scored with a backhand.
Filppula and Eberle each scored his 10th goal of the season, giving the Islanders eight forwards with at least that many.

"That's our team, really," Eberle said. "You look at the way we've won games and played, it's about the team. When we're playing our best, we have all four lines contributing. Everyone chips in."
After being outshot 11-5 in the first period, the Blues seized control and outshot the Islanders 18-6 in the second, but Lehner preserved the 1-0 lead through 40 minutes.
"They had some good chances," Lehner said. "I think we played really well the first period. Obviously, the momentum shifted in the second period and they kind of took over, but that's how hockey goes, there's going to be momentum swings. They're a really good team. I think we worked really hard and we deserved the two points tonight."
Perron tied it 1-1 at 6:07 of the third period when Ryan O'Reilly beat Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield to a puck behind the net and found Perron in front for a one-timer. Perron has 15 points (six goals, nine assists) during his streak.
"I think after the start they had, we played our game and we took over a little bit," Perron said. "Again, we outshot another team (31-25). It's been a trend for us recently, a long time, three weeks at least. It's a good sign and it's a big point for us.
"It's tough in overtime. There's going to be openings. If you lose control of the puck like we did, it's tough to get it back. They've got some strong guys over there."

They said it

"I thought we played a good game. Deserved better, but that's the way it goes. They're a good team and they do a good job defending and they're hard around their net. We just couldn't buy another one." -- Blues coach Craig Berube
"It's a little bit of an ugly game, not many chances really created. They've got a good team over there. They're hard-checking and good D. It was just one of those games. It happened to open up in overtime tonight and we capitalized." -- Islanders center Mathew Barzal
