zubov

Sergei Zubov will have his No. 56 retired by the Dallas Stars before a game against the Washington Capitals on Jan. 28, 2022.

The number was scheduled to be retired last season until the ceremony was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 51-year-old was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Nov. 18, 2019. He is the Stars/Minnesota North Stars leader among defensemen in points (549), goals (111), assists (438), games played (839), power-play goals (60), plus/minus (plus-103) and shots (1,694).
Selected by the New York Rangers in the fifth round (No. 85) of the 1990 NHL Draft, Zubov scored 771 points (152 goals, 619 assists) in 1,068 games for the Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Stars, and 117 points (24 goals, 93 assists) in 164 Stanley Cup Playoff games. He won the Stanley Cup twice, with the Rangers in 1994 and the Stars in 1999.
Dallas acquired Zubov in a trade with the Penguins for defenseman Kevin Hatcher on June 22, 1996 after finishing the 1995-96 season last in the Central Division. The next season, the Stars were first in the Central, the first of seven division titles they won during Zubov's 12 seasons.
"I'm not sure what happened in Pittsburgh, but things seemed to not click there," Stars teammate Mike Modano said in November 2019. "When the Stars traded Kevin Hatcher to Pittsburgh for Sergei in 1996, I was like 'Wow, how did (Stars) general manager Bob Gainey pull that one off?'
"It probably goes down as the best trade the Stars ever made."
Zubov scored 51 points (10 goals, 41 assists) in 1998-99 when the Stars won the Presidents' Trophy, awarded to the NHL team with the best regular-season record (51-19-12). His 13 points (one goal, 12 assists) in 23 playoff games helped them win the Stanley Cup.
"Sergei was one of those guys, for sure," Modano said. "He was backbone of the defensive corps. I think his play kind of filtered throughout the whole defensive corps, his ability to be patient and be in the right position, not panic, make the right play.
"He just let the hockey do the talking when he was on the ice and that was it."
Zubov will be the sixth player in Stars/Minnesota North Stars history to have his number retired, joining Neal Broten (No. 7), Bill Goldsworthy (No. 8), Modano (No. 9), Bill Masterton (No. 19) and Jere Lehtinen (No. 26).
Zubov is now coach of Dinamo Riga of the Kontinental Hockey League.
