hockey pitcher

The Savannah Bananas brought a little bit of the ice out to the grass this weekend.

Bananas pitcher Ryan Kellogg used a hockey stick during one of his live pitches in a game in Portland, Maine on Saturday.

Kellogg, a left-handed hurler (but apparently also a right-handed shot), handled the yellow "banana ball" like a puck with a hockey stick before flipping it up to himself and firing a ball toward the plate. He was also wearing hockey gloves, the left one which he had to toss aside before the pitch.

It was an impressive display from the 29-year-old pitcher, a native of Whitby, Ontario.

The Savannah Bananas, for the uninitiated, are a barnstorming exhibition baseball team known for wild in-game hijinx and playing with alternate baseball rules that have skyrocketed the team's popularity. It's not unusual to see flaming balls or bats, players on stilts and lavish musical interludes before at bats.

In fact, in true Bananas fashion, after the pitch was thrown following the hockey stick flip, a spectacular catch was made by Bananas centerfielder David Meadows, who astonishingly snagged the ball in the middle of performing a backflip.

The Bananas are currently in the midst of their 2023 Banana Ball World Tour.
