Dell made 31 saves in an 8-2 win at the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday. Martin Jones started San Jose's first three games and allowed nine goals on 64 shots (.859 save percentage).
Sharks coach Peter DeBoer said the plan from the beginning was for Dell to play in at least two of San Jose's first six games.
Rangers defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk will be a healthy scratch. Shattenkirk, who played 7:29 of ice time in an 8-5 loss at the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday, missed the final 36 games last season following knee surgery.
The Rangers are trying to avoid losing their first four games in a season for the first time since 1998-99, when they started 0-4-1.

Sharks center Joe Pavelski needs one point to reach 700 in the NHL. He has 319 goals and 380 assists in 892 games, all with San Jose.
Rangers forward Pavel Buchnevich, who is moving from right wing to left wing, has two goals in three games.

Status report

Pionk will be scratched for the first time in his NHL career. He played in the final 28 games last season after being recalled from Hartford of the American Hockey League and the first three games this season. … Claesson, who signed a one-year contract on July 1, will make his Rangers debut.
