Jimmy Howard purchased $50,000 worth of N95 masks to protect health care workers at Detroit Medical Center fighting against the coronavirus pandemic, the Detroit News reported.

"These health care workers are fighting the battle of their lives, on behalf of all of us," the Detroit Red Wings goalie told the newspaper. "They are heroes, and we've all got to do what we can to support them and thank them for their tireless work right now and in the weeks to come."

The Jimmy Howard Foundation has helped families in the Detroit metropolitan area since 2005 by supporting research of and treatment and cures for various diseases.

Red Wings center Dylan Larkin and his father, Kevin, collected 50,000 vinyl powder-free and nitrile gloves this month, giving 25,000 each to Detroit Medical Center and St. Joseph Mercy Health System, and forward Justin Abdelkader donated 1,200 meals for workers at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital.

The NHL season has been paused since March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus.
