Chara returned to TD Garden as a member of the Washington Capitals and received a video tribute. The return was tempered, however, as the building remained without fans due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When Washington came back to Boston on April 11, Chara received an ovation from the fans at TD Garden, which was open to spectators in a limited capacity.

After 24 seasons, over 1,600 regular-season games, and 200 playoff contests, Chara announced his retirement and signed a one-day contract with the B's to finish his legendary career with the team and city that meant so much to him and his family.
