The main differences between the new jersey and the original are in the striping on the arms and color of the bottom half of the arms, and the striping on the bottom of the jersey.
The announcement came right before the 2020 NHL Draft and the team's statements about the jersey mentioned the makeup of the roster, which includes many players who were acquired through the draft.
"On Tuesday, Oct. 6, at the 2020 NHL Draft where the team had a historical roster of 13 selections, including a top-heavy 3rd , 5th and 28th overall in the first round, the Ottawa Senators announced a new jersey for the upcoming 2020-21 season," the team announced. "This will see the team returning to their roots, adorning a new design which pays homage to the inaugural Senators jersey that was sported from 1992 - 2007. This is a nod to the success of the past and a celebration of the future with the bright young stars and talented prospects."
In announcing the return to the old logo, Ottawa owner Eugene Melnyk expressed that several interested parties wanted to see the laurel leaf-adorned Roman soldier come back. The Senators will not be using a secondary logo.
"It is time for the Senators to return to our roots," he said. "The fans of this great franchise have high expectations. We have heard from our fans, our partners and our players, and we have listened. It is time to return to our heritage, but in a bold, new manner. The Senators have a rich history in our community, and we are ready for the next chapter to begin."
Tkachuk and Chabot also posted on social media that they were excited for the new uniforms.
