Devils lose 10th straight game

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Mike Smith made a save against Taylor Hall on a penalty shot with 2:38 remaining, and the Arizona Coyotes held on for a 5-4 win against the New Jersey Devils at Gila River Arena on Saturday.
The Devils have lost 10 straight games (0-8-2), the longest losing streak in the NHL this season, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. They trailed 4-0 before scoring three straight goals.
With Arizona leading 5-4, Smith closed the five-hole to stop Hall on the penalty shot after defenseman Luke Schenn took down the New Jersey forward on a breakaway.

"I don't know what the move is. But I've played against him for quite a few years now," Smith said of Hall, who played six seasons with the Edmonton Oilers. "You just try to be patient and wait for him to make the first move.
"We didn't totally blow it … but a little hectic, a little bit closer that it needed to be."
Tobias Rieder and Jakob Chychrun each had a goal and an assist for the Coyotes (24-35-8), who won for the first time in three games. Radim Vrbata and Tobias Rieder scored in the first period, Brendan Perlini scored a power-play goal in the second, and Smith made 26 saves.
Kyle Palmieri scored twice, and Beau Bennett and John Moore each had a goal for the Devils (25-31-12), who have not won since Feb. 18.

Defenseman Tony DeAngelo scored to give the Coyotes a 5-3 lead with 6:29 remaining. Moore's goal with 4:58 left made it 5-4.
Max Domi fed Vrbata in front for his 16th goal to make it 1-0 at 1:27 of the first. Rieder made it 2-0 1:26 later with his NHL career-high 15th goal. Chychrun scored to make it 3-0 at 18:26.
Devils coach John Hynes pulled starter Cory Schneider after Perlini scored to make it 4-0 at 3:59 of the second. Schneider made six saves.
"We had a couple of breakdowns, but we gathered ourselves a little bit better after that," Hynes said. "Unfortunately, we were one short."
Palmieri scored off a Hall pass to make it 4-1 at 5:47 of the second. Bennett stole the puck from Schenn and scored at 12:09 to cut the Coyotes lead to 4-2.
Palmieri got the Devils within 4-3 when he deflected Damon Severson's wrist shot from the point between Smith's pads 17 seconds into the third period for his second goal of the night.
Keith Kinkaid made 20 saves on 21 shots in relief of Schneider.

Smith closed his pads just in time to stop Hall on the penalty shot and keep the Coyotes ahead by a goal late in the third period. "I scored on Smith I don't know how many times, probably three or four times, five-hole in my career," Hall said. "I tried to go five-hole and it just got up the ice a little too high, and he made a good save."

Unsung performance of the game

Coyotes defenseman Connor Murphy had an assist, a plus-1 rating, five blocked shots and five hits, including a big one on forward Kevin Rooney in the first period.

DeAngelo patiently waited for an opening before scoring the game-winner with a shot from the high slot.

The win was Smith's 126th with Arizona, tying him with Nikolai Khabibulin for third on the all-time Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets franchise list (Ilya Bryzgalov, 130; Bob Essensa, 129). … Vrbata's goal was his 153rd with the Coyotes, passing Jeremy Roenick and Laurie Boschman for eighth on the franchise list.
