Mathew Barzal won't skate in Canada junior camp

Islanders forward prospect to stay off ice with hip strain

New York Islanders prospect Mathew Barzal will not skate during Canada's National Junior Team Summer Development Camp, coach Dominique Ducharme said Friday.

Ducharme said Barzal will be at the camp to meet with the coaching staff and potential teammates for the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship. Canada will hold camp July 31 and Aug. 1 in Toronto and Aug. 2-6 in Plymouth, Mich., where it will practice with and play games against the United States, Sweden and Finland.

Barzal, a forward, is one of nine players invited to the camp to have played for Canada at the 2016 WJC. He had two goals and one assist in five games.

The 16th pick of the 2015 NHL Draft, Barzal was held off the ice during Islanders development camp earlier this month because of a hip strain.

"It [stinks] obviously," Barzal said then. "But at the end of the day, the Islanders have the best interests for me. It's just a little hip tweak, so it's just erring on the side of caution. But come September, I'm going to be ready and come in and try to make a statement."

Also attending the camp but unable to participate are center Nolan Patrick of Brandon of the Western Hockey League and defenseman Philippe Myers, a Philadelphia Flyers prospect.

Patrick, a candidate to be the first pick of the 2017 NHL Draft, had groin surgery earlier this month.

The Flyers announced July 6 that Myers had hip surgery.
