Oilers at Ducks | Recap

ANAHEIM — Beckett Sennecke and Leo Carlsson scored 42 seconds apart early in the third period, sparking the Anaheim Ducks to a four-goal period and a 7-4 win against the Edmonton Oilers in Game 3 of the Western Conference First Round at Honda Center on Friday.

"Hopefully, they turn out to be great players because they've shown all the ingredients," Ducks coach Joel Quenneville said of the 20-year-old Sennecke and 21-year-old Carlsson. "They want to be the best they can be on a daily basis, and I think that kind of pushes them and they're showing that's their mindset and that's their objective."

Mikael Granlund had a goal and three assists, Carlsson and Jackson LaCombe each had a goal and an assist, and Lukas Dostal made 20 saves for Anaheim in its first home playoff game in eight years.

“It sounded like an army out there," Sennecke said. "They’ve been waiting eight years for this, nine years for a win, so it was pretty special.”

Connor McDavid had a goal and an assist, Leon Draisaitl and Evan Bouchard each had two assists, and Connor Ingram made 32 saves for the Oilers, who had leads of 1-0 and 3-2.

"You look at the goals against and just some stuff that shouldn't happen, especially this time of the year," Edmonton coach Kris Knoblauch said. "There's lost coverage in front of the net a couple times or a little careless with the puck, stuff like that."

The Ducks have a 2-1 lead in the best-of-7 series. Game 4 will be at Honda Center on Sunday (9:30 p.m. ET; ESPN, SN, CBC, TVAS, Victory+).

The game was tied 3-3 entering the third period before Sennecke put the Ducks back in front, scoring far side from the left circle off a rush to make it 4-3 at 2:53.

Carlsson then converted a feed from Troy Terry on a 2-on-1 rush, deking to his backhand to tuck the puck in at the right post for a 5-3 lead at 3:35.

McDavid brought the Oilers back within a goal, getting Edmonton’s first power-play goal of the series with a wrist shot from low in the right circle that went off the stick blade of Ducks defenseman Pavel Mintyukov and off Dostal’s body to cut it to 5-4 at 8:36.

Jeffrey Viel controlled a loose puck at the end of an Anaheim rush and swept in a backhand from the bottom of the left circle to make it 6-4 at 16:57.

LaCombe scored into an empty net with 1:33 left for the 7-4 final.

“We have to get pucks deep and not be turning pucks over because they counter pretty well," Oilers forward Kasperi Kapanen said. "They have a lot of young talent and a lot of speed, we have to keep getting it deep and our forechecks can be a lot better. And defensively we have to be quicker, skate more and close our gaps more."

EDM@ANA, Gm 3: McDavid finds the back of the net on the power play, puts Oilers within 1

The Oilers had just killed the first power play of the game and were getting outshot 11-3 when they scored first for the third straight time in the series.

Anaheim defenseman Ian Moore tried to clear the puck away from the front of his net but it went to Vasily Podkolzin, who scored with a snap shot from the right face-off circle to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead at 13:12 of the first period.

Ducks defenseman Drew Helleson took a shot from the right point that Mason McTavish tipped off the tip of Ingram's glove and into the net to tie it 1-1 at 16:18.

Anaheim was back on the power play when Ingram made a save on Chris Kreider's deflection, but the rebound came out diagonally in front of the crease to Granlund and he scored into an open net, making it 2-1 Anaheim at 17:45.

EDM@ANA, Gm 3: Granlund caps the play to put the Ducks on top in the 1st

After getting outshot 20-7 in the first period, the Oilers scored twice in the first six minutes of the second period to move back in front.

Anaheim defenseman Jacob Trouba was unable to stop the puck behind his net as it rimmed around. The puck continued to Draisaitl at the sidewall and he made a backhand feed to Kapanen, who scored his third goal of the series with a snap shot from the right circle to tie it 2-2 at 3:57.

"We’ve had success putting it behind them, getting it to the top, shooting it, getting it back," Oilers forward Zach Hyman said. "We have to play simple.”

Dostal couldn't cover the puck after making a save on Bouchard and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins jammed it into the net for a 3-2 lead at 5:39.

The Ducks tied it 3-3 at 12:37 when Granlund got to a rebound in the slot area and pushed it to Alex Killorn at the bottom of the left circle for a shot into the open side of the net.

Granlund thought he scored again at 16:35 of the second, but the goal was immediately waved off because it was determined Granlund used a high stick and a video review supported the on-ice call.

“We were physical," Viel said. "I thought we were on their D and I think we capitalized on our chances. We were aware of their top guys when they were on the ice, and I just thought we played a good game.”
