The Detroit Red Wings placed goaltender Jimmy Howard on seven-day injured reserve Wednesday.
Howard sustained a lower-body injury at 5:39 of the second period of a 4-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena on Tuesday when Red Wings defenseman Nick Jensen and Lightning forward Erik Condra fell on top of him during a scrum in the crease. Howard was unable to put weight on his right leg and had to be helped off the ice.

"I take complete blame on [the Howard injury]," Jensen said after the game. "The guy who stepped on at the red line got by me and created a 3-on-2, and I hustled back. I saw they got a shot off, and I kind of panicked, tried to tie the guy up, got hooked around him, and I ran into Jimmy."
Howard made 15 saves before he was relieved by Petr Mrazek. He's 5-7-1 with a 1.96 goals-against average and .934 save percentage in 17 games (15 starts).
The Red Wings recalled goalie Jared Coreau from Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League. Coreau made 32 saves in his NHL debut, a 5-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Dec. 3. He's 11-6-0 with a 2.18 GAA and .924 save percentage and one shutout with the Griffins.
