Canadiens

MONTREAL -- Brendan Gallagher scored two goals, and the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Detroit Red Wings 4-2 at Bell Centre on Monday.
Paul Byron scored, Alex Galchenyuk had a goal and an assist, and Carey Price made 26 saves for Montreal (28-37-12), which has won two of its past three games. The Canadiens were eliminated from Stanley Cup Playoff contention on March 21.

"It's not easy losing. I think this year it's been pretty tough on all of us," Gallagher said. "We're all pretty competitive guys, and any time you go through loss after loss, you sit there and you try to come up with solutions and you're not able to, you just kind of feel like you're failing. And for us, there's really no other way to go through it than to learn from it."

Gustav Nyquist and Tyler Bertuzzi each had a goal and an assist for Detroit (27-38-11), which has lost its past 11 road games (0-10-1) and 13 of its past 14 overall (1-12-1). The Red Wings were eliminated from playoff contention on March 22.
"No one wants to lose," Bertuzzi said. "It's hard to be in this position, and he only way to get out of it is to keep working hard and not think about it too much."
Jared Coreau made 27 saves and is 0-4-0 with a 4.40 goals-against-average and .859 save percentage in five starts since he was recalled from Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League on Feb. 20.
"Not good enough," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "He's got to be better than that. That's just the reality of it. In this League, in order to win, you've got to have at least a (.910) save percentage on a consistent basis in order to win. You probably need higher to win on a higher level than that, and so, he's got to be better."
Gallagher gave Montreal a 2-1 lead at 4:27 of the second period when his shot deflected off Red Wings defenseman Danny DeKeyser's skate past Coreau.

"He's an example of what hard work and perseverance, commitment and dedication is all about. He never complains about anything," Canadiens coach Claude Julien said. "He just goes out and does his job, which is what you would expect from your leaders. And I think that's what I like about Brendan. He respects what we're trying to do, and he just goes out there and does his job, and when you do that, you get rewarded with the kind of season he's having right now."
Gallagher extended the lead to 3-1 at 9:32. After he deflected Mike Reilly's shot from the point, Coreau lost sight of the puck, and fell backwards in an attempt to cover it up and knocked it over the goal line.
"I tipped it down and [Coreau] was nice enough to push it in for me," Gallagher said. "It was a good shot by [Reilly] and I just got a little piece of it."
Bertuzzi cut the lead to 3-2 at 13:41 on a rebound.
"We did a good job of shooting tonight, and [Nyquist] got it through traffic there and me and [Henrik Zetterberg] were both at the net whacking away," Bertuzzi said.
Galchenyuk made it 4-2 with a power-play goal at 15:34 of the third period.
Nyquist scored on a one-timer off a cross-ice pass from Zetterberg to give the Red Wings a 1-0 lead at 4:41 of the first period.
Byron tied it 1-1 with a power-play goal at 18:11.

They said it

"I don't think there's a guy who works harder in this locker room, and it's not easy for him either because he's one of the guys that's consistently going to those tough areas and he's getting rewarded for it." -- Canadiens defenseman Jeff Petry on forward Brendan Gallagher
