"It's not the way you want to win, but it definitely shows a lot of character," Bernier said. "I didn't think we played our game tonight. I thought we took over in the third."
Brock McGinn, Micheal Ferland and Dougie Hamilton scored for the Hurricanes (7-7-3), who are 1-4-2 in their past seven games. Sebastian Aho and Teuvo Teravainen each had two assists, and Scott Darling made 29 saves.

"People are going to say, 'Well, you get a lot of shots,' but we get a lot of chances too," Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour said. "We don't finish like we need to, and it's tough because guys are working hard to get those chances."
Mantha tied the game 3-3 at 9:02 of the third period. His shot was blocked by Brett Pesce, but Mantha followed with a high shot to the far post.
Mantha made it 3-2 at 6:04. Andreas Athanasiou passed to Mantha for a wrist shot that beat Darling glove side. Gustav Nyquist had the second assist to extend his point streak to seven games.
"On the first one, [shooting to the far post] was calculated. I saw the 2-on-1 coming up and I went low glove," Mantha said. "The second one, it was just a reaction off of the (blocked) shot and the goalie was down already, so it went over his shoulder."

DET@CAR: Mantha quickly scores his second goal in 3rd

Mantha did not have a point in the prior four games. He has five goals this season.
"He's almost cursed with the ability to make a play," Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said. "While he can make a play, his best attribute is that wrist shot. Keep shooting that wrister as much as possible. We just have to keep pounding that home to him."
Athanasiou gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead at 8:04 of the first period on a one-timer from the top of the right circle. McGinn made it 1-1 on the rebound of a Haydn Fleury shot at 16:40.
Carolina took a 2-1 lead at 8:35 of the second period. Aho passed to the slot, where Ferland redirected the puck for his Carolina-leading eighth goal of the season.

Hamilton made it 3-1 with 2:59 remaining. Bernier stopped Aho's backhand, but Hamilton pinched from the point to score on the rebound.
"They skate fast and have a really good forecheck, and we took two penalties as well," Bernier said. "That made it feel like they were 10 minutes in our zone."
Bernier preserved the 3-3 tie with 4:33 remaining in the third period, stopping Aho on a backdoor attempt at the left post, and stopped Jaccob Slavin, McGinn and Aho in the shootout.
"Bernier just played amazing tonight," Mantha said. "All the credit goes to him. He made huge saves at key moments."

"When we have a chance, we have to end those games. We had a power play when we were up two goals. We have to play even better in those situations and make them pay." -- Hurricanes forward Sebastian Aho
